What is the longest you've modeled or worked on your layout in consecutive hours? I went on an 18 hour bender on Saturday and got so much done! Finished some models, started others, and got lots of scenery completed. I find that when I get into the "zone," I'm best to ride it out for all it's worth. Usually results in some great productivity. All in all it was a great model railroading weekend for me Please feel free to share your experiences/war stories! Peter

When the wife was away

When the wife was away visiting family I worked 6 thirteen hour days in a row on my layout 13' x 20' room. During that time I went from a bare space to studding the walls, installing all of the electric (outlets, switches, 20 can ceiling lights, breakers), hanging all drywall (including ceiling) and taping all drywall joints - all by myself. Was I exhausted? You bet!

Armchair Marathon

My last marathon lasted for months and has finally been suspended. Thank you Rick. Your new project has inspired  me to get building.

Randy, that marathon was on

Randy, that marathon was on my previous layout (Richlawn Railroad V1) 5 years ago in Georgia. It is amazing on how things have changed in 5 years! Now a marathon for me is about 6 straight hours working on the layout. Golden years my foot!

If it wasn't for the "Last Minute", nothing would get done...

Dear Peter,

72 hour non-stop wiring session 15 years ago to get a local train-club sectional layout ready for it's debut show.
(UK outline quad-main <> dual-main junction onstage + 10 track dbl-ended staging yard
First time on Gurana Energy drink, can only be chalked-up to youthful exuberance, naivety, and a misguided-belief that said that the clubmembers actually cared if the layout made it to the show operable or not...

Next 72-hour marathon was the last 3 days to get an On30 Aussie logging show layout ready for it's debut. Out in the garage in the cold of winter, layout "ambience" soundtrack playing and freaking out the local wildlife (birds trying to sleep, but hearing other birds calling to them @ 02;30?!?!?).

2003 brought the Sydney leg of the Aust NG Convention. That was a back-to-back run of 10-hours-sleep-in-5-continuous-days leading up to the event, and then 72 hours non-stop actually running and packing-down the event. Photographic evidence of my state at the end of the show have been distroyed, as it was deemed to be examples of "cruel and unusual" punishment.

"Brooklyn : 3AM" managed to avoid the last-minute-before-debut rush as far as the modelling went, but the entire scratchbuilt Layout Sound soundtrack was completed in a 36-hour marathon session (Thurs and Fri), just before pack-down for it's debut show. (the quietness of o-dark-hundred made mixing sub-60dB SPL "scale sound" sooo much easier!).

2009 brought another Aust NG Convention to Sydney, and unfortunately, those who do not learn their lessons from "last time" are doomed to repeat them. Such was the issue here, with a similar lack-of-sleep to the 2003 event occuring again. Thankfully, this time round, my now-wife was onsite and in-the-thick-of-it alongside me, and went to extraordinary lengths to make sure I stayed fed and watered, if not actually taking 5(sec?) breaks every soo often. (I love my wife, and she loves me _and_ my hobby...)

The next major project is forming as we speak, and has a firm deadline of 28th Feb next, for a one-and-only show in early March. Anyone taking bets on whether this one will prompt another "marathon"?

Happy Modelling,
Aim to Improve,

Last Fall my wife went away

Last Fall my wife went away for the weekend with her mom and sister so I had the house to myself.  It rained all weekend and I spent Saturday in the train room from around 9 AM to around 3 AM Sunday.  The time flew by.  I had the hockey game on and drank a few beers that night, lol.

Good stuff

Good stuff guys. I especially like the "setting a deadline" aspect. Tends to keep one pumped to journey on when the going gets tough! Glad to see I'm not the only marathon man!
