Has anyone experimented with the El Cable lights for making neon signs?  I was thinking of using this to make the Bates Motel neon sign for my layout.  Wanted to hear from the experts.

and a small video of the kit in action

Haven't done that; however I

Haven't done that; however I have done custom graphics using a standard animated sign. You can a standard sign that has a shape and style you like that has multiple graphics and instead of using one of the supplied graphics create your own. If you want more info let me know.

Custom

As a last resort I may settle for a refit, but I would like to keep it as close to real as I can.  I pulled the trigger and bought the animated kit for about $30.  I need to scratch build a sign now.  Like this one.

I'd like to be

kept updated on this, so can you post any hardships/caveats/tips when you get it all done?  Looked at those kits, but not sure how they are done, really.  Even seen them up-close at train shows and still had no clue.

Most signs I see for sale are way too much for what I need, yet a simple 'cafe' or 'diner' sign is too simple and not personalized to the business it's signing.  I'll probably just go with a small placard/billboard with an overhead gooseneck LED, but I'd like to see the creative alternatives.  I model the 50's and in a town of maybe 2600 at that time, so all the stuff out there is kinda over-kill, like I said.

By they way, I got a flickering LED to try for a future campfire (not the campfire kit with two colors of LEDs but just a single flickering one...would be great for a candle inside a building) and thought that it somehow could be used as a faulty neon...like when you see a sign and the letter 'E' is flickering but all the others are fine.

electroluminescent neon signs

I just set up a model of a 1960's local bar using the Miller Engineering kit. I was a little disappointed in the circuit board used to drive the electroluminescent panels.  After much "fiddling around"....I got it to work somewhat.....

My "neon" beer signs are very small....so getting razor sharp graphics is tough.....I'm still working on trying to improve the "sharpness" of the signs.

You can see a video clip of it here:

Nice bar

Those signs and the flickering lights behind the glass door really set the mood.
