My club has several older Athearn diesels that we want to "rejuvenate".  Some of them need to have their gears replaced (Ernst gears...really noisy).  Trouble is..some of them have the old metal outside frames and we need to replace the Ernst axle gears with the original Athean axle gears p/n 60023.  These 60023s are slightly larger in diameter than the newer 60024s and the hubs are wider...they are not interchangeable.  I have tried my usual Athearn sources and they don't have these 60023ss.  Does anyone know of a source?

Older Athearn parts seem to remain widely available at train shows and ebay.  The later style of Athearn trucks (with plastic sideframes) are a direct replacement (assuming the later style of truck was manufactured for a particular model, as not all were), and other brands of trucks like those from Kato, Stewart and Atlas are often drop-in substitutes for the originals.  I have Athearn frames with complete drives scrounged from such sources.  If you have another mechanism that is otherwise unused or can be had cheap (e.g. unpopular roadname, damaged shell, missing detail parts or whatever), it could be an easy swap to upgrade the Athearn.

E-bay!

Run a search for "Athearn Parts".  You will be amazed at the results.   That's how I keep my fleet operating!  And as Rob stated, train shows. look under tables or scrounge around.

Athearn gears

Thanks Nelson and Rob.  I have been searching the internet for a week now and no luck.   Fortunately, the club has a collection of old, unused Athearns and I can scrounge what I need for now.  But I will keep my eyes open for this part at train shows.
