Deemiorgos

Last summer, I decided to make a diorama using natural material for scenery like gravel and the dust and dirt from various gravel sifted through different sized strainers. The track and ballast is commercial the rest including the sub-roadbed is not.

I'm going to use what I learned from making this diorama for a future layout that will depict a coastal branch line terminus that is near the coast.

The beach wrack is made out of corn silk I dried in the oven.

Another inexpensive method is

Another inexpensive method is too use poly fibers and very small twigs for filling in spaces where you don't want to spend much. This was the case for me on a shelf layout. I knew the layout wouldn't be around for long and didn't want to put much money or effort into the corners of the layout yet wanted to hide the plywood.

Nice diorama.    There

Nice diorama.

There are all sorts of materials that can be used for scenery.  I found this stuff in the gutters on my roof...

Every spring this stuff falls from oak trees and gathers in street gutters.  You could spray or dye it green and use it for ivy or underbrush.

Sedum Spectabile makes pretty good trees.

" the beaches near Carpinteria..."

I used to surf at Rincon and I recall watching new SP tunnel motors roar along the rails that were just across the highway from the beach. The coast line was pretty active in those days. The coast line is pretty slow now and I wonder if any of those tunnel motors still run on the UP?  The rip rap scene looks neat , looks like a still water area though and not the open ocean where the waves would leave a more scalloped kelp line. .DaveBranum

And the award for creative use of corn silk goes to...

Deemiorgos.

I thought I'd heard of every natural material out there, and yet you've managed to come up with another one I had never considered.

I remember trying all sorts

Jay, I remember trying all sorts of things from tearing apart scrub brushes to shredding thread, but couldn't get the look I wanted then one day at the market I noticed some brown corn silk on some corn and voila! I dried it in the oven, but be careful, it will go black very fast..

An open ocean beach would be

An open ocean beach would be fun to model ctxfm74. I modeled this scene after studying images of small bays on the east coast of Canada in the Bay of Fundy area.

And what else is mind blowing

And what else is mind blowing is it only cost me the price of the ME track and some left over ballast and acrylic paint. The board it is on is cut recycled hollow core door.

Well done

I assume this is HO (based on your other postings elsewhere) but I can see all sorts of applications in all sorts of scales.  When I was first starting out in 1980 I made conifers for my layout using dries armatures of Nandina picked right as it was just beginning to flower.  Grabbed a can of mom's hair spray, some course ground foam . . . and they worked, but were never tall enough to be yellow or loblolly pines (which we have down south in spades).

I'll have to add these to my scenic tricks bag - we have gutters and we eat a LOT of corn in the summer.

Thar might be Iron in them there materials!

Natural fine gravel and sand can make great scenery materials.  Just be aware that should there be ferrous metal particles (quite common in eavestrough tailings and beach sand) your engines may pick them up on their motor magnets.  Make sure to run a strong magnet over your mineral materials several times to pull out any ferrous material that they may contain.

Nice flashback

It's especially evocative of that stretch of frontage road  containing the Beach Grill at Padaro, or whatever it calls itself now.

Thanks for the heads up on

Thanks for the heads up on that. Fortunately it is on a diorama. I will certainly keep this in mind for the future layout.

This is about the best beach ever.

What scale is this?

And, more importantly, what's the beach made from?

This looks fantastic!

Thanks Philip, Are you eating

Thanks Philip, Are you eating corn now? When in a bind to create a look, I go outside and explore natural things and never give up. Some of the most creative things I've done was when I didn't have money for the hobby or during difficult times, and for those times, I'm now grateful. Cheers.
