Gabe

I'm looking for a recommendation on a manufacture that has open passenger cars for a motion picture tour lot layout my son and I are doing.  I will be running diesels and other cars around the layout, but my son wants to find a small steam engine and tour cars.  Kind of what is pictured here.

Any recommendations?

We are modeling in HO scale.   Thanks in advance for any help.

Open side cars

The Omaha train is a 36" gauge Crown. I operate its little brother (15") at http://www.littletootrailroad.comevery summer weekend. I don't know of any RTR excursion cars, but a bit of surgery on some Roundhouse 34' Overton coaches should produce an reasonable facsimile. I don't believe the Roundhouse cars have interiors, but 36" Crown coaches have seats that look very much like wrought iron park benches and those should not be too hard to find. BTW, after seeing the pictures you posted, I have to say I have never seen a kid who looks more like his dad! Good luck with your project. I'm a bit jealous as neither of my "kids" (now 38 and 32) ever had any interest in trains. Oh, well, that's what grand kids are for!

+1 for the MDC cars

Dear Gabe, Norman,

If you can find them, +1 for the MDC cars, particularly the shorty passenger cars. (How I miss the old MDC 3-in-1 packs...). They are perfectly suited for such "theme park" type trains, and can have the windows and wainscoating cut away vertically to form "toastrack" cars.

If you're looking for a RTR option, the B'mann excursion cars (patterned after the Cass Scenic RR open cars) may be another option, although they are significantly taller, larger, and less "western/theme park" looking than the MDC offerings...

Don't forget that the MDC shorty tite-bottom orecars and similar could also be converted into "themed" excursion cars (cut a doorway in one corner, bench seats down the sides), kinda like the "Thunder Mountain" mine train rides...

PS Gabe, don't forget that you can also use the railroad to haul props, animals, crew, and gear to and form each of the "sets" around the layout...

Disneyland used to have

Disneyland used to have closed passenger cars, today, they are now all open cars, facing the fireman's side

am I the only N Scale Pacific Electric Freight modeler in the world?
