I saw an opened bundle of 3-tab roofing at the home supply store, with single sheets of roofing shingle on sale for less than two bucks.  The top surface was course, but the underside was a speckled dark color, looking a lot like new pavement. The roofing material is flexible, and even cracks if crumpled, leaving a good pattern for aging pavement.  Has anyone here ever used this stuff for roadways and parking lots?

No, I haven't but . . .

it does look more like chip seal because of the coarse texture.  And, for the price it passes well for a parking lot.

Maybe a very light coat of medium grey spray primer would give it a less coarse appearance.  I wouldn't hesitate to try it on my layout.  It would save lots of time.

Regardless, though, it looks fine.

Tar Paper

Our club is currently using tar (felt) paper for roads.  It is easy to use, goes down easy with caulk and has the texture of asphalt.  You do have to paint/weather it to tone it down or it looks like brand new asphalt.

Shingles

Dave Leider(sp?) had an article on his SOO Line layout, he used shingle material for streets. I liked it alot.  I did a quick search and I think it was in June 2008 MR, but I have not checked my library to be sure.

I plan to try shingles and/or tar paper for blacktop

Tar paper sounds great - easy to cut and weather, and easy to make curves, hills, etc.  It is probably easy to shape the subroad so it had a realistic crown to it, too.

Thanks!
