Weekend fun!

I love those SOO units, When I worked on Norfolk Southern out of Manassas, I was on the Manassas to Hagerstown pool and quite often caught a train we had on the division called 11R and 12R that came out the North and always had SOO power on it, although it was usually SD40's and such. Great work there.

This week I finished up the Country Store and got it onto the layout and finished up the scenery around that and Moe's Garage that I posted in black and white last week. Here is a small "Early Morning" panorama of the 2 structures.......Have a great weekend folks!

HHRR's New Beacon Branch

This is a scenery shot (no trains here yet) of a nearly fully scenicked portion of my layout's new extension that I've been working on this past week. My HHRR is set in the autumn of 1941 in the Hudson Highlands of lower New York State. The scene still awaits the addition of  hedges and window detail for the apartment house, vehicles, people and other small signs of life.

The red brewery at left is a Bar Mills kit, while the low relief yellow structure to the right in the scene (Breskin Milliners Co.) is scratchbuilt.

The end of an era...

1941 is an interesting year--the depression is winding down, but it's still peacetime--here.  Gorgeous scene--calls for a small boxcab rumbling towards the tunnel...

LEDs are my newest passion, giving them away for FREE too!

Well I have taken a bunch of photos of the Upgrades on the LEDs I have done.  I am using them for my new video where I am giving away more than 500 LEDs,  YES I AM!!  I am so excited about it.  Ulrich models ROBS some of you nice people because you paid $64 for an Athearn Genisis SD70ACe upgrade kit OR paid $7.50 per LED that have the Fiber optic Strand glued to it but it can only cost you less than $0.60 if you buy the LEDs and solder the wires on yourself.  Yes you can do it!  I am so passionate about people saving their hard earned money to get the items for so much lesser, to do LEDs and even make your own money selling them for MUCH LOWER than those companies like Ulrich Models, TCS, and Miniatronics!  Anyway here is a few pictures of previews that will be in the upcoming video in a day or two!  I will be giving away sets for doing TWO SD70ACe (front, rear headlights and ditchlights) or any Athearn, OMI or Kato Model.  So look out for your chance to get TWO SETS FOR FREE!  The LEDs that i have worked for weeks on have the Fiber optic strands already attached to them, the are ready for a QUICK install.  I just love to share dawg!!  You can see in the first Picture The Athearn Genesis SD70M with OEM light bulbs and the Upgraded SD70ACe with LWV18C (headlights) and LWL283 (ditchlights).  You can also see all the engines on the right in one picture have LEDs and the ones on the left are OEM Lightbulbs.  Enjoy the photos and PLEASE give LED assembly a try!  It is easy and YOU CAN DO IT!  Well enough of that, here are the pictures

Stearns-Heisler #6

Great work again this week. Joey, your photo has great atmosphere, I would like one of those ice-cold Coca-Colas in the cooler please!

Recently, the Estrella Copper Co. received its new Stearns-Heisler. Overall, the crews really like the little loco. Here are a few photos of the in-progress model, as it would have looked early in its service life:

The tiny bunker originally provided by the builder just didn't meet the needs of a desert locomotive...so the shop crew replaced it with a 'bigger better borrowed bunker' from a scrapped Climax.

I replaced the bell cord with finer thread, painted the roof, pilot beams and smokebox door, added a crew, coal boards and coal load. The loco has been lightly weathered with an airbrush, but the clearcoat needs to be toned down with chalks. I have weathered the pilots, but need to finish the rest of the locomotive to flatten everything out.

I hoped to put a keep-alive capacitor in the tender, but according to Soundtraxx there is no accommodation for connecting one...a smaller capacitor is on one of the boards, but I am not about to try to replace it. So I guess the larger bunker is now just for appearance, although it makes perfect sense. The original bunker would require crews to take water almost every hour, wasting precious time and movements. That's critical for this locomotive, which makes the daily Estrella Local run between the smelter in Sonora Grande and Estrella. It has to pull well up the steep and tight curvature of the high line...with few water stops along the way. It performs well, and is already earning its keep!

Question she might ask her fellow steamers late at night in the engine house...'does this bunker make my rear end look big?'

Great looking photo's Verne. I'm wondering what kind of camera/lens set up are you using?

Thanks

Thanks, Driline...I have been using a Nikon Coolpix 8700 for the past seven years now, it is still going strong! It's not fancy, but Nikon has excellent lenses and IMHO their macro capacity is exceptional. These shots were done in my normal layout lighting with a tripod shooting aperture priority, lens stopped down to f8. When that's not enough for sufficient focus in the shot, I use Helicon Focus and manually shoot multiple exposures focused at different points in the scene.

Black and Whites of The Daily Effort

Weekend fun on my S scale layout, which represents the Canadian National Railway's branchline to Port Rowan, Ontario in the 1950s. Here are four pictures of the mixed train, known by the crews as The Daily Effort.

Here, CNR 10-wheeler 1532 is in charge of mixed train M233 as it curves through a meadow just outside Port Rowan:

On another day, M233 passes between apple orchards as it arrives in Port Rowan:

The return trip to Hamilton, Ontario was M238. This photo shows the mixed train in a slightly earlier era - the early 1950s, rather than the late 1950s - when CNR's diminutive 2-6-0s were the regular power. The train is just emerging from the orchards as it leaves Port Rowan:

And one last shot: CNR Mogul 86 in charge of the mixed as it crosses a bridge in the Lynn Valley:

I have many more photos and other information on my blog, Port Rowan in S Scale. Enjoy if you visit!

Yes, Trevor's shot IS a model

Trevor, nice photos, I love black and white images of vintage train scenes. Your last image is remarkable, it belongs in the 'Yes, it's a Model' feature! All it needs is a bit of smoke and a wisp of steam from the pop valves.

Benny, in Arizona parlance, 'canteen' is something you put over your shoulder (or saddle horn) to carry water. Assuming you are referring to a water car or auxiliary tender, absolutely! Problem is, I have a very short tail track on my switchback up to the highline, and I want as short a loco as possible to handle an extra car or two. This solution adds no length, and enhances the Heisler's proportions a bit.

David, that's some nice modeling. I used photoshop to adjust its brightness so it's easier to see.

interestingly

that comes out pinkish on my monitor - I'd already boosted the backlight and brightness to get a reasonable level on my laptop.

FWIW it was about a 2s exposure at f/29 with a 60mm macro lens.

But thank you, Charlie!

David - your monitor is way off then

David:

Your monitor is way off then.

The original photo you posted is so dark it's just some black-brown blobs. Charlie's photo looks much better - and Charlie's monitor has been calibrated to match official specs with a professional calibration device (because he was MRH editor).

Charlie's version also looks much better on my computer (Charlie and I try to match our screens as much as possible).

Why was my topic

Why was my topic deleted?  No damn answer but it is just gone?!

MODERATOR EDIT:

Al,  firstly this post has been edited to remove the unneeded language in it.  Secondly this post as well as your first post have been forwarded to the ADMIN Team.

Lastly I think you will find that your original post may have been in the wrong thread, I think the DCC and/or Electrical thread would be more appropriate, hence the reason it has possibly been marked as spam (although it is not) or someone has taken it as a form of advertising.

And there is also a question relating to your comments in that original post made about another dealer, that may need to be either altered or removed for the that post to be reinstated back into the MRH forums.

Other MRH users:  Please DO NOT mark posts that are clearly NOT spam as spam.  If there is content within a post that is either inappropriate or not inline with forum rules, please contact the ADMIN Team or Moderators for action.

The trip up to the highline wouldn't necessarily require it all the way, but it would help if the Heisler is headed on the route out of town.

A 4 wheel tender would certainly expand it's operational range, they usually had to fill the tender ever 30-50 miles or so, and that's a lot of water no matter what your beast...

monitor off

Thanks Joe.  I think the problem is that I'm using a laptop, not a real monitor, and the viewing angle can make a considerable difference in the brightness of the image, so I don't really know what corresponds to 'reality'.  That said, I recognize that my original is on the dark side.  I'll make an effort to lighten up in future postings.

Here are my pictures of upgraded LEDs in engine

Ulrich Models is GREAT and they sell LEDs at a very low price of $7.50 a piece or $64 for the Genesis SD70ACe models.  I would have LOVED to break the wallet by ordering a bunch of sets from that FANTASTIC "manufacture/seller" however I decided to be a fool and assemble my own LEDs for the cost of $0.08 a piece.  Yes it is super easy and anyone could do it i promise you that BUT why do it?  Wouldn't you rather just spend $64 for the Upgrade one from the lovely Ulrich Models?  Well I HIGHLY recommend you purchase the LEDs from them, Go ahead and spend that hard earned money or you can be a selfish fool like me and buy your own LEDs in lots of 100 for $8.00 with free shipping.  I am so selfish that I have even decided to give about 500 of those LEDs that i assembled away for FREE.  How dare I do that!!    I am sharing pictures below of the upgraded engines and the ones I am giving away for FREE are the same exact ones and they have fiber optic Strands already on the LEDs and are ready for an easy installation.  In the meantime I highly urge you to spend that hard earned money to UM and even TCS who sells them for a few dollars a POP!  To all of you that have already bought the Genesis upgrade kits, you are way smarter than the rest of us and you made a great investment.  Congratulations.  To the rest of you that will be selfish and do your own, look out for a video from another selfish guy in the upcoming day or two.  Take care

P.S.

How did I do this time around?  I praised the HECK out of the manufacture/seller and did not say anything bad about anyone else but myself.  Now this topic should be allowed to stay up and people should now be allowed to view the pictures I am sharing of the models in the Weekend PHOTO Fun topic.  Thank you and have a great, fantastic, awesome, spectacular day.
