Friends,

My professional travels will find me in Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins, CO for most of next week, flying in and out of Denver International.  I'll have some spare time at different times during the trip, and so other then a return visit to Caboose Hobbies, I'm looking for railfanning opportunities.

I would really appreciate any specific recommendations of easily accessible and. or public areas from which to catch some train action.  I don't mind taking to the hills from the major highways, but I won't have time to boondoggle three hours one way to catch a single daily local either.  Sadly, based on it's posted hours, I don't think I'll make the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden this trip.

Looking forward to your suggestions, thanks!

Go to Union Station downtown,

Go to Union Station downtown, they have 2 layouts down in the basement. One is S scale, the other is HO scale.

For railfanning, there's always a lot of action at the UP north yard. There is a bridge at 48th & Kalimath Ave. that you can walk on and get a perfect shot of the yard. Just park your car near the UP Yard office there.

I saw the UP 844 from this bridge, and OH IT WAS AWESOME!

Beware of the danger lurking at Caboose, you walk in with a full wallet, and walk out empty wallet.

Thanks Michael

I've already had two attacks of Caboose Wallet Emptying Syndrome in the last two years, so I recognize the symptoms.

Golden RR museum

If you can possibly squeeze in a visit to the Golden RR museum Phil, you will not be disappointed. Depending on the time of year and day of the week they even have rides available, including on a RGS Galloping Goose.

@ Michael: That Sat shot is very familiar. About ten years ago I built a spec house on Beach Ct., about 5 blocks north and west of that image, and entered onto I-70 and the Mousetrap from that area pretty much every day.

Happy Railroading, James B

P.S. IF you are in Golden, another thing you might want to check out is this:

This is a 15" gauge railroad at Heritage Square , which is an old timey amusement park south of Golden on Colfax. This is misleading as Colfax is east/west. This is on Colfax after it goes behind the "hogback" and turns south. If you are coming from Denver on either Colfax or 6 heading west, you take the south turnoff that will say "Morrison". When I was there, the gentleman who ran the railroad (can't remember his name- will probably pop into my head later today , Carl?? ) had a functional steam engine, but from what I can see they are no longer running that.  I had my woodworking shop there 20 years ago. Yep, I was the "old timey craftsman" there for a few years. I mostly mass produced and wholesaled things, but on the weekends I would put on the leather apron and "put on a show" for the tourists and make a few retail sales. I also got to play in the shows put on by the western dinner chuckhouse theater next to me. They paid me with dinner theater tickets.I mostly got to play a bad guy and had lines like " Well Ah thinks yer Yella!" at which point the shootout would begin, and I of course got to play dead...

Northern Colorado

If You get up north on I-25 You could try OmniTrax also known as the former Great Western Railroad and the Great Western Sugar Company. It's Very easy to find in Loveland as the GW Sugar Towers are visible for miles.

The GW Rwy is one of My personal Favorites. Enjoy Colorado!

Fort Collins

I use to visit my grandparents who lived on South Howes St. which is one block West from South Mason. The BNSF mainline track still runs up the middle of Mason. I am not sure how often trains use this track now, but as a kid this was one of my favorite train watching locations where I was able to watch the final transition from steam to diesel.

Even if the trains are not running through town, a visit to Fort Collins will allow you to see how this (formally small) western town grew up around the rail line. At the North end of Mason you will find the wye at the junction of the UP, Great Western (now UP) and BNSF where there is usually some traffic.

Union Station

May be a good thing to call first.  Denver's Union Station is undergoing an extensive renovation, and may not be open to the public until Spring of 2014.

Colorado Railfanning

If you have a mobile browser, join Colorado Railfan Yahoo Group because they have all the latest happenings on the Joint Line, Front Range Sub and the Brush Sub and of course anything really unusual in the Yards in Denver.  Enjoy all the construction disruption at DIA as the new bridge work is spectacular.
