Hi,

I'm in the process of creating a prototype CN hopper and I plan to repaint a old center beam to CN. The thing is, Microscale Inc. doesn't have any center beam decals except for 'HO Minical'. I've never seen these sort of decals before and I don't know if they will work. Does anyone know if these will work for N scale or is there another manufacturer of N centerbeam decals?

Minicals?

The term "minical" refers to smaller sheets than the normal Microscale decal sheets.  They're typically enough for only one car as opposed the regular sheets which have enough for several.  The decals themselves are still normal HO size, so wouldn't work for N.

When I've been faced with decaling a car for which no specific decals exist, I've "kitbashed" them from other sets that have similar markings.  You might need one set for data, another for reporting marks, another for a logo, etc.  Sometimes I've used sets for unrelated roads if they have certain things I need.  Not being in N or modeling CN, I can't say what the possibilities are for your project, but maybe you can scrounge what you need from sets intended for other cars.

" is there another manufacturer of N centerbeam decals?"

You might look on ebay .I've gotten decals on there before.  For N scale where the writing is so small I've found a lot of the data, etc. can just be generic as folks can't read it from normal viewing distance. I've also used graffiti and weathering to cover areas where I didn't have the proper lettering..DaveBranum

Microscale help

If you have specific questions about Microscale decals, Chris Palomarez is a member of the Dieseldetailer (dieseldetailer.proboards.com) and uses the name of shoofly.  Contact him there and he will address your questions.  Chris is the product manager and is quite active on that board.  I've corresponded with him several times.

Similar cars

Look for similar sized/capacity cars, for example a bulkhead flat or a chain down flat, for the lettering.  Don't think of the decal sets as being for a specific car as much as a style, color and content of the decal.  You don't need bulkhead centerbeam flat decals, you need dimensional data for 65 ft long, 100 ton flat car with white lettering.  You don't need a centerbeam herald, you need a 15" CN herald (or whatever).  You might have to buy a couple sets of decals to scrounge the pieces you need.

No, I repainted a ATSF

No, I repainted a ATSF covered center-flow hopper that I got for free from another modeler at the local model railroad club. I used some CN box car decals that work very nice.

I found some BCOL (BC Rail,

I found some BCOL (BC Rail, CN subsidiary) centerbeam decals that I will use. Thanks for the response and I will post pictures of my model projects.

We have minicals available

We have minicals available for n-scale too. My recomendation is to use the CN reporting marks off one sheet such as 60-4086, then use the centerbeam data set 60-4247 for the rest of the lettering. Chris Palomarez
