I found these in Brownfield Texas. They look like F40s except for the nose on one and the lack of exhaust fans on the second. San Luis & Rio Grande, and speed lettering to boot. The were being used as local power. They were consisted with a ex-BNSF GP35u LTEX 2581

Update

Updated 08/25/2013 to correct Amtrak types JG

I had some time to do a little research.

The units are in fact retired Amtrak F40PH's. The first unit has the nose modified to make room for a crew walkway and is a mother unit. The second unit is in fact a slug. I have not found much information on the rebuild details

These units were in Colorado. on the San Louis & Rio Grande. This Railroad is owned by the Permian Basin Railways. The Lubbock and West Texas Railroad is also owned by this company. This is the line that is in Brownfield Texas. These units were most likely transferred to help with the upturn in traffic caused by the current oil boom.

A few months back I found a couple of SD9043MACS on the Texas & New Mexico line in Hobbs NM. This line is also owned by the Permian Basin Railways

SD9043MAC

They are so unreliable that some of the major roads have stored or sidelined them and are selling some off.

think about this....

the SD80's and 90's are being retired from the class 1's, yet the SD40's and SD60's are still being rebuilt by them..
