DT Train

Hi All,

Just wondering what happened to Paul, Ryan and the podcast.  There haven't been any updates since Oct 2012.

Rethinking the podcast

We are rethinking the podcast. Paul does have some content to post, but I think the show needs some more thought put into how it's formatted, etc.

Paul is a great guy, but I think we need to get him some more help, maybe a co-host, etc. Ryan has pretty much bowed out at this point, with his own podcast to tend to.

Been considering alternative approaches for the podcast and haven't come to exactly what we want to do just yet. I also have not established a schedule of topics, etc for Paul, so the show's been languishing (blame me, in other words).

We're also looking into other media, and for that all I can say is stay tuned.

Perhaps some might find it redundant but..

...what about asking some of the MRH article contributors to schedule some time to come on the podcast and talk about what their article is about?  Or has that already been tried with little interest?

I like the Podcast

I like the podcast and hope you continue with it in some fashion. I do listen to the other podcasts as well while driving or working on the layout. I like a broad variety of topics and not just a one interview format. Just my 2 cents.

Podcasts

Do you need an iBox to view these?

In general, I am not a viewer of Podcasts (there are some available for viewing on the PC).  The reasons being:

1. My connection is only 512 Mbps (Sri Lanka), so they are very slow to load,

2. In general the quality is ... well, let's just say it is usually disappointing after spending so much time downloading.

3. Finding the piece I am interested in is painful.

Having stated that, there have been a few that I have very much enjoyed ... I think it is mainly having a very dynamic host (with a good sounding 'radio voice') as well as interesting subject matter.  Making them available across many platforms may increase the audience size as well.

Appreciate the comments

Joey and Dave, I appreciate your comments. Dave - many of the past podcasts have indeed featured authors of our articles. The next one will include 1 or 2 authors depending on their availability. Based on your comments, I will continue with this practice. Joey, fellow WV guy, the last several podcasts have included writers of our articles, industry news related discussions with Richard Bale, and DCC topics from Mr DCC, Bruce Petrarca. As mentioned above, the next podcast will be multi-topic, too. An influence is podcast length - the objective is 45 to 75 minutes. Longer conversations due to the nature of the topic can be broken into multiple podcasts as we have done before. While we are discussing this aspect, what are listeners' length preferences? Again, thanks for taking your time to listen to podcasts and comment. Paul Gillette paulg@mrhmag.com

For The Record

Paul, for the record, I love the podcast.  I grew up in AZ, south of Phoenix, so I enjoy hearing about the 'ol stompin grounds' from time to time

Expanding upon my previous post, what about having a few 'co-hosts' that can do interviews with many of the article submitters and that interview can be compiled in with the podcast at a later date?  That would distribute the 'work' load of acquiring content and might even allow for the creation of a small backlog of interviews (much akin to the back log of articles that MRH maintains).  Granted, that puts more of the effort into editing, but as the people doing the interviews get practice, the editing should get easier.

Further, if these theoretical 'co-hosts' have Model Rail related clubs, shops, shows, etc in their geographical area, maybe they could turn in to a Roving Reporter or Man/Woman on the Scene.

Just some ideas.  There is lots of Audio material possibilities out there, some of which haven't really been explored by any Model Rail related podcasts yet.

Length preference?  The more the merrier!  I've become attuned to Model Rail Radio's 4+ hour podcasts and The Model Railway Show's 30-45 min formats so... I really don't think there is an incorrect length for the MRH podcast.

Cheers!

Notes

Hey Paul - I thought you are you a WV guy? Nice shirt...

Regarding length - I can imagine how much time and effort goes in to the podcast. As crazy as it sounds, the longer the better. I have found myself getting into a great show and then boom, it's over. When one of the other shows listed the length as something like 4 hours, I thought "you've got to be kidding", but then found myself listening to them in bits during the commute or while working on models. I really enjoy the podcasts, both MRH and the others.

Regarding guests or topics -  Multi topic is a great thing! Interviews are great also as long as it is not some long drawn out conversation about a clinic some dude hosted or someone spending an hour pitching a craftsman structure kit he is making, I can listen to all that concerns our love of model railroading, from an interview all the way to scenery.

I'm not saying do a 4 hour show, but honestly, as long as the guests and topics are good, I can listen to as long a show as you can make produce.
