I'm looking for the "right" colors for the Rio Grande Heritage loco, and can't seem to match anything up yet.  I'd rather not custom-mix, although that avenue is not off the list.  Has anyone found the correct Orange and Grey to use for these?  Thanks in advance......

D&RGW Heitage Loco

I'm guessing this is the loco you are talking about:

That's not actually orange. Rio Grande used Aspen Gold as its livery color.

Thanks. Grey?

thanks, Ken.  Do you know who makes those colors in model paints?  I've seen Floquil and Polyscale, and the Rio Grande yellow and orange don't seem quite right.  Also, what about the grey?  Certainly the black is easy, and the aluminum color on the running gear.  But the orange and grey are elusive.

Google is My Friend

I did a Google search for "Paint colors on the UP Rio Grande heritage loco" without the quotes, and one of the results was wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_Railroad#Paint_and_colors

They say that the UP locos use Harbor Mist Gray for the top of their regular livery, and based on the photos from the page, it looks like a close, if not exact match. This article lead me to a link for the heritage locos, and on to a UP newsletter with pictures. http://www.uprr.com/newsinfo/releases/heritage_and_steam/2006/0619_drgw.shtml

Knowing the actual colors you are looking for should make the search for them easier. I know Flowquil makes road specific colors, as do the others.

I hope this helps.

Same path!

Thanks, Ken, but I also followed the same path, and it's not helping.  Each photo of these units shows up on the screen slightly differently.  I've also been thru all the Flowquil, Polyscale, and Scalecoat colors, and none of the yellows are called Aspen Gold.  Harbor Mist Grey is wrong for the roof of this Heritage unit.

So, I'm still left looking for either a paint match, or if someone has blended other colors, what mix is "right" for the yellow and the grey?

I've also picked up publications and memorabilia, and each of them has variation in the colors.  So, short of buying a new locomotive from MTH or Athearn, I'm up for alternate ideas!!

thanks,
