Big Paul

Hi everybody

I have almost finished my first layout, but some buildings are still lacking particularly the freight house.

Since I'd like scratchbuild it, I'm looking for some drawings or similar.

Can somebody help me?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Greetings from Italy

Paolo

Freight houses

I don't know what era you're modeling, but when it comes to freight houses, many railroads had standards, and then there are those roads where anything goes. I built this freight house from scratch 15 to 20 years ago because I couldn't find anything that really interested me as either built ups or kits.

Freight houses were very important to small town back in the 50's when I was growing up. They were money losers for the railroads, but brought most everything into small towns. Appliances, clothing, food staples, tools, farm equipment and just about anything you could thing of. There was no Fed Ex or UPS back then. The closest thing was REA Railway Express Agency). They would make pick ups and deliveries to businesses or individuals. Sometimes small independent trucking companies would also provide this service.

This one was totally scratchbuilt from wood, and being that it was going to be at the front of the layout an interior was detailed for it. This one was built to fit a particular space. That's on nice thing about scratchbuilding.

By the way, where are you in Italy. I spent a few stationed there and traveling about the country. Loved it and even learned the language.

Small Prototype Freight House

In 1978 I took these pictures of the Missouri Pacific Freight House in Mc Pherson, Kansas.

I like Montanan's freight house and I thought these pictures might give you some additional ideas. I don't have any drawings.

Papolo, be sure to update us on what decide to do.

Asbestos Siding

I know this is a bit off topic, but...

I love the asbestos siding used for the upper walls of the MOP freight station.  That material was so common years ago for both residential and commercial construction.  In fact, you can still see it in use on occasion.  I've been trying to entice various manufacturers for years to offer that kind of siding to us modelers.

Freight House/Depot

I have printouts of the Eagle Lake Depot after it got gutted by fire a couple of years ago, if any one wants them, I will scan them in and post.

What's so strange is the photos above look a lot like Eagle Lake Depot did.

Nice NP Freight house

Very nice NP freight house. I love the interior details and it is a nice size for a medium sized town.

Eagle Lake prints...

Doug,

I, for one, would love to see what you have on the Eagle Lake Depot.

Re: Asbestos Siding

Jack,

As a kid, I remember living in Navy housing with that kind of siding. It was used on lots of other buildings on more than one Navy base I spent time on. It would be a nice addition to siding choices. I wonder if it could be "printed" in one of the 3-D printers that have become available? it might be possible to use the roughness of the printing process to create the texture of the siding. Just a thought.

Freight house

Hello Big Paul,

Scratch building can be very rewarding as you can see on Montanan's post.

You can build structures without using drawings/blue prints. I've used photos  of protoypes in the past and used the surrounding objects as a reference to help me with guessing the dimensions.

As soon as I can figure out, having no luck so far, on how to add images to this post, I will send you a photo(s) of the freight house that I made.

Cheers

Depot

I know you plan on a scratchbuild, but this is the freight depot kit I made from Rusty Stumps.   He makes the kit in O and HO and the price is very reasonable, plus he is an advertiser here.   And he ships world wide.

CLICK the photo to see the entire building.   Just a satisfied customer.
