Since we have a few (how many ?) On30 modelers on here I thought I'd post a few pics of two projects I started several years ago but never finished because I decided I needed to stick with one gauge.

The first three are of a 2 truck diesel critter using an old Bachman two motor drive.

Always looking for some thing critter like I ran across this prototype hauling a loaded coke car.

While surfing the net for a drive for this unit I came across Nigel Lawton's site. He has the neatest friction drives I ever saw for small scale critter. So I had to build one.

I should probably finish these up some day and use them on a display module or an Ingle Nook.

I like them both

It looks like the larger one is made out of wood.  Did you intend to treat it on some way to make it look like sheet metal, or were you going to leave it wood for an unusual look?

I like the boxcab critter.  It looks impossibly top heavy, the way a good NG critter should.  I can't help thinking it would look neat with a trolley pole or pantograph on the roof, too.

Wood & Styrene

Ken,

The first one is entirely made out of styrene. The cab was lined with 1/32" scribed siding for that wooden cab look. I started to make an interior to look like one of SW1500 I rode around in for a whole day with a crew switching the yard.

The brass one isn't as heavy as you would suspect. It weighs in at 4.2oz. Probably total weight won't be over 10oz. when complete. I'm going to add a NCE decoder and some lights, give it primer coat and put it on e-bay when done.

Might do the same with the first one too since I don't do On30 anymore.

Interesting

Interesting projects, Bernd...I like the proportions of the hood diesel, and the brass critter has a slightly improbable look that, when completed with details and finishing, will have an endearing quality.

The Brass Critter

It looks taller than it should be. I'm thinking it's because of the narrow gauge. The prototype is standard gauge and looks more "squat". Might look better once I get a roof on it, some side skirts and the end beams.
