We've just added Steam Locos and Diesel locos to the post categories, which allows you to create a "virtual forum" for posts on those specific topics if you like.

Take this post, which has a photo of Craig Bisgeier's 1890s layout:

Notice. you can go to the top of this post (or any post) with the Steam Loco category on it, and click it. That gives you a list of all posts in only that category.

Pretty handy!

A serious suggestion...

...adding a "prototype information" category or maybe instead a railroad research category?

Please note I am NOT trying to trigger a debate on US vs THEM, I'm just interested in being able to label an inquiry that is research about the prototype, and only have "general discussion" be the only practical choice.

prototype information

oddly enough, "prototype information" is actually the first category in the cetegory list already

I meant...

...as a Forum.

Cool but

.... how did the category get assigned?

Who assigns it?

How do they do it?

Are the posters supposed to assign the category?

You choose the category while posting

Click on "Make A Web Post"

Then Choose the type of post you want. Usually a 'Topic' or a 'Blog.'

And then you can choose the forum and then category for your post.

Categories are just for easy filtering of the forums.

Thanks

I create so few threads I never noticed that before.

Won't filtering by category exclude any of those articles that have another category?  I believe those pictures were from Craig's article in MRH, so they would probably have a category of Layout Tour or Layout Design.

You can shift-click

You can shift-click and select more than one category if you wish.

Is there a way to add these "post category" links after the  post has been saved?

Take this post,

"this post" as in "this post you were actually making at that moment that actually started this thread"?

Because maybe I'm daft but I don't see ANYWHERE on this page where any "Steam Locomotive" category shows up to click on.

Note the date on my post: 2013. We didn’t move to this new forum until December 2021, so those instructions are obsolete, sorry.

Yes, but on the current forum Journals page  https://forum.mrhmag.com/journals-was-blogs-891775
there are three Journals apparently created after the December 2021 forum change with "post category" icon/links such as N-Scale that seem to work as intended.
