Hi all.

I'm a dedicated turn of the century (20th) steam era modeler.  I'm fast becoming a fossil, I fear.  Would it make sense to create a category in the forums for just that......Steam era modeling?

As more and more modelers move over to more recent times, principally diesel modeling, I find it increasingly difficult to find information in the forums pertinent to steam.  Modeling older steam, unless you're modeling transition era railways, doesn't work well in today's modeling world as there are different parameters for almost everything related to each era.

As an example, I went to a website dedicated to Appalachian coal railroads the other day and found almost zero information on steam.  I contacted them and asked if they included steam in their website.  The short answer was no.  That's all fine and good, but it kind of leaves guys like me to do some scrambling to find pertinent information on the era I've chosen.

I don't have the resources to purchase many publications of old, and indeed there are fewer and fewer around these days.  The libraries in my area are pretty much devoid of RR history so I have to depend on trolling the web for info.

I'm just wondering if a dedicated forum to steam would be feasible here.

Thanks.

Gord - I'm interested.  I

Gord - I'm interested.  I model the Northern lower peninsula of Michigan between 1890 and 1905.

Excellent

Hi Paul.  Glad to see your post.  I model the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Kootenay Lakes area of British Columbia, 1900-1920 or so.

Thanks for the reply.

Cheers,

I have mixed feelings about splintering things too much

I have mixed feelings about splintering up the MRH website too much. As it is now it's easy to use the recent posts list to find most anything of interest.

I'm curious, what's the reason for wanting to carve off a separate area just for steam era modeling? Do you think you'd like to avoid having the growler lovers involved? Or are you more interested in making steam content easier to find in among the rest?

If the latter, then it would be easiest to just create a steam loco and diesel loco category. Then all you would need to do is click the category and shazzam! Only posts related to steam locos would appear.

Steam Modeling Catagory

I agree that having a separate catagory for steam modeling would be easier for going to subjects of specific interest. When currently navigating the various boards I never think to use the search function and doing so, while getting you specific info that you are looking for, never exposes you to other topics or subjects that may be of interest in your particular area of modelling.

Right now there are 31 pages of posts under "Locos and rolling Stock" containing over 6700 posts. I have been a member since January and trying to catch up on all these postings and stay current with new posts is daunting. I am modeling both steam and early diesel, but steam is my passion.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Okay, done.

Okay, we've added new Steam Locos and Diesel Locos categories so you can view posts that only apply to those categories - sort of a virtual forum, if you will.

Category

Hi Joe;

You're absolutely correct.  I couldn't find the right words for what I was trying to say.  I think it would be terrific if you could add another category.

My apologies for the ambiguity of my post.  Personally, I just want a better, faster way to find steam related posts, blogs and links through this website (my favourite, by the way).

Thanks for weighing in on this.

What's a category?

I haven't seen any searches or filters on the forum views.

How will the site know which category to put a post in?

Posting to a Catagory

When you click on "New Topic" the resulting screen asks you for a Board and a Category. You choose what catagory the post is listed under, not the board. If you don't pick one, I don't know what the board defaults to.

Kootenay Lake.

Interesting Gord. I am in the middle of building a layout of C.P. Rails barge operation on Kootenay Lake in the transistion era. One of my mysteries is what ever happened to the tug Melinda Jane. As a kid back in the 60s I watched her take the rail cars from Proctor up the lake. We would even get Dad to take us up the lake and watch as they transfered cars at the Blue Bell Mine. My Dad was a rail fan too and got to know the captain. We were lucky enough to take a few trips up the lake on her. Looking forward in following your posts.

Cheers,

Barry
