Back a few years ago I started to scratch build a GE 85 ton steeple cab based on the two Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting had the 60 or more Utah copper owned. I finished it about a year ago as a non operational locomotive in a HO scale diorama. Over the past year I have been designing HO cars in 3D and printing them though Shapeways.com. The Atlas HH600/660 has a slightly larger bolster to bolster dimension than the actual 85 ton steeple cab but is a good platform for it. After designing the cab and trucks I have started the locomotive with the plans of making two. Today I prefit the cab and trucks and removed some excess frame length. Tomorrow I will post a couple of photos.

I love steeplecabs

I look forwards to seeing your build!  One of the options for my first powered scratchbuild is Atlantic Shore Lines #100.  I look forwards to seeing yours!

Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting

Hi All;

I grew up in Flin Flon, Manitoba.  HBM&S had a major copper mining operation and Smelter there and ran the steeple cabs (we called 'em 'dinky's'.)  right past our door.  The steeple  cabs pulled in loaded ore cars from satellite mines where the ore was crushed and smelted.  The plant site also had a large reduction mill and a fairly large zinc plant.

The minesite had two main headframes, one called North Main and the other called South Main.  In addition there was a huge open pit operation there in the early days (circa 1930).

As a fresh young 18 year old, I worked for a year on that mine railway.  I tamped a lot of ties.

I'm wondering if you checked online for the 'Northern Lights' publication by HBM&S.  There were a lot of pics of those steeple cabs in that publication..

Cheers,

Gord Schneider
