Included with these pictures of my CNY&NE Railroad is a night shot of Maywood station.  My HO freelanced railroad includes many of the lines in the Maybrook, NY area from the 1955 era.

Enjoy,

Layout

Very well done sir.  I am modeling the EL from Huntington Indiana to Hammond Indiana, and I hope I can do my layout as much justice as you have yours.  It is superbly done and would love to see more pictures of your layout.  Especially love that Erie RS-2(3) in the second picture.  Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing.  Dan Groninger

Layout Construction

Thanks for the kind words.  The station is a CMR Western Maryland York kit that I thought was very cool.  I wanted to have a very impressive station and was having trouble finding something that fit the bill and size requirements.  The underpass was built using an Atlas bridge girder and City Classics modular concrete retaining walls for the sides.  I used a sheet of styrene brick for the roadway.  The RS-3 is an Atlas model that I re-painted and extensively detailed.  The same is true for the EL GP-7.

The layout is in a 12'X20' room and has two main levels set at 40" and 58" with a third nine-track staging level set at 24".  I am currently laying track on the upper level and have about 75% of the lower level sceniced and with structures completed.

Thanks for your interest,

Jim Leighty

Very nice!

Great looking scenes!  I like the underpass too.  That's a eye catching feature.  I was impressed to read that you decorated the RDC.   Those NYC safety stripes are complicated!   Did you find decals or paint them on?

Very nice work.  I especially like your use of building flats.  Gives me some good ideas for a similar scene on my own layout.  Hope you'll be sharing more photos with us.

West Maywood Team Track

Here is a picture of my West Maywood team track.  The track to the left is the L&HR 16 car interchange track.  The track to the right which is going behind the trees is the L&HR main which leads to a 2 track staging track area which curves behind the buildings in the background.  Jim

Team track - nice!

Jim, Very nice scene! I'm curious on the width of your bench work for that area - is it 24"?

Team Track Bench Width

My bench work depth in the Team Track area is 18".  The rest of my layout has 24" bench work.  I have tried to maintain a 36" aisle width throughout my layout room which is why I used a narrower width along this wall.  Actually, I have found that you can do a lot with only an 18" width as long as you plan it out carefully.

I have additional pictures that I will post later when I have time.

Thanks, Jim

Located near your prototype inspiration?

If you don't mind me asking.  I live close to Maybrook and always love to meet modelers in the area.  Especially ones with great looking layouts!  Really nice work

The NYO&W in its last years

Also modelled is the NYO&W and we run a few passenger trains and a local freight that does some switching at the Maywood area industries.  In its last years of operation, it is very short but does run daily.  I have made lots of changes to the original Maybrook area which include passenger operations, much more industry and a port operation.  The local Maywood Terminal Railroad operates a daily carfloat with their own tugboat between Port Hendrick (Maywood harbor area) and Poughkeepsie which goes on into New England.  The carfloat holds about 12-13 cars and provides good interchange for the yard crew.  This port area of the layout is currently under construction but I will provide some pictures later as more progress is made.

NYC RDC Safety Stripes

The NYC RDC safety strips were decals that I purchased and applied and they were a pain to do.  They had to be cut around the doors and windows and were hard to keep straight.  I am not sure what year the NYC applied them to their RDCs but they did not come with the original delivery.  They really look sharp and I also have an all coach version with the same strips applied.  I used to go to NYC's Harmon station as a kid and would see these RDCs come in and meet the electric suburban trains and then go on to Poughkeepsie, where they turned and came back.  I am trying to duplicate this operation at my Maywood passenger station.

Building Flats

Most of my building flats are regular structure kits that I kitbashed by piecing the wall sections into a long skinny building. Sometimes, I needed to make custom roof sections to complete them.  Several of the flats have staging tracks running underneath them.  I have a bad habit of trying to stuff too much track and building on my layouts, a temptation that I should try to ignore!  The flats are a very nice way to add depth and finish off the back of an urban scene.
