Has anyone purchased turnouts from Cream City?  Wondering if they're good and if they're still in business.  Their website seems disabled.

Hmmm!

I just visited their web site and it is functioning. Have you tried Fast Tracks or Proto87 (two of our sponsors)?

Supplies only

I have bought supplies for hand laying track from them. Nothing recently, but within the last 6 months. They sell some nice PC ties that are longer and leave less waste when making a turnout. Thomas G.

Can you post a working link?

I have Googled them to see if the link I have is current and it appears to be; all it yields though is a description of family issues that interrupted the business and a plan to be back by early February.  http://www.ccturnouts.com/  I'm trying to be as unobtrusive as possible while trying to resolve this.

Nobody home

I ordered and paid for turnouts in October of 2012.  In November I was told that they were almost done.  Then family issues and a death in the family.  Since then no product, no communication, no refund, nobody home.

Order with caution and I wouldn't pay until you get the product.

Glenn Thomas health

I just received an email that Glenn Thomas (Cream City Turnouts) is recovering from some health issues and will probably not be filling orders any time soon.  Need to find another source if you are looking for handmade turnouts.

Glenn had a minor stroke in early March

Details below...

"This is a mass email to concerned customer.

My name is Peyton Harvey and I'm a friend of Glenn and Nancy. The week of March 13th, I guess, Glenn had a minor stroke and later a tumor removed from his neck area. I've heard that he was having difficulty with the death of his mother and the two sisters out west that have been giving the other siblings trouble. Glenn is recovering at the VA and doing well. He has to have therapy because of the lost motor skill to his right arm/hand and some speech therapy due to the operation. Nerve damage. I just got access to his home computer/passwords and when I opened his email account, there were over 900 emails. I can't go through all of them, so I'm emailing the most recent ones from the past week or so. I found 4-5 customers that I sent refunds to. I believe that is all there was. I don't know when Glenn will be coming home or what his future plans are. I know that Nancy told me to sell some of his brass engines and other kits laying around to help with their money situation. That's all for now, Peyton Harvey"

Same problem

I have had the same problem.  I tried to get my money back to no avail after numerous e-mails.  I ordered and paid for the turnouts at approximately the same time.  I had purchased from them in the past without a problem.  I was told early on they were ready to be shipped and then nothing.  I can respect that family comes first, but a refund should have been provided.

Send my your information

Hi GP,

If you send me the details I will see if I can sort it out for you.  We keep in fairly close contact with Glen and might be able help.

Why is it that half of model

Why is it that half of model railroad business owners seem to have the worst luck in the world? Everyone in their family is always sick or just died.... Or, they themselves have suffered a life altering illness.....

Model railroaders health

Model railroaders health issues may be age related. I don't have any scientific facts; however, I believe that the majoriety of modelers are "older" (whatever that means) and with age comes more health issues, I'm 62 and I sure have poorer health than when I was 32!

I would be more inclined to

I would be more inclined to believe that IF the business was not already struggling to communicate, ship orders, or were constantly coming up with excuses on why the orders have not shipped.

Rather then saying" This is a part time business and I am swamped; I dont know when I can ship your order, but I will get to it", they make excuses. They say "two weeks" or "UPS lost it" or "I shipped it yesterday, let me find the tracking number", etc Then it seems that everyone magically gets health issues all of a sudden.

Skeptimism can itself become a fatal disease...

As one who has experienced "life altering" illnesses, some more easily overcome than others, I can assure you that they can change your plans in ways you can't begin to anticipate.  I'm now 69, a member of the zipper club and not nearly as patient or forgiving as I should be...

While not a small business owner I've experienced ordering delays like this and to be quite honest more frequently from well-known manufacturers that offer items in limited numbers and can't curb their enthusiasm for promising to get something out the door by a certain date.  I'm going through that right now with a couple of different vendors that I know will eventually deliver a quality product.

Since we've heard from folks who know Glen personally (unfortunately I don't) I think in this particular case we need to cut some slack; I've never known a manufacturer quite so willing to air personal details to his customers.  I know for myself they'd have to pry my brass locos from my cold, dead hands...

Your turn is coming, when it does, come back and read your post. Maybe by then you will have learned not to be such a jerk.

I dunno that Stottman was being

I dunno that Stottman was being the jerk you assert him to be. I too have noticed over the years that an inordinate number of my RR friends got cancer or other terminal health issues versus my non-RR friends. Maybe the years of exposure to chemicals whose dangers were not yet recognized, but surely this is a more sedentary hobby, which also brings on its own set of issues.

I think the more important case this episode illustrates

Is that an inordinate number of our manufacturers are "mom and pop" shops with no one to run them when mom or pop goes down.  They also don't have plans in place someone could execute to deal with this sort of situation, and their family and friends may may not have the business savy (or the time) to step up and help.

I would hope that some of  the regular small business participants of the MRH forums would be looking hard at their businesss models and making sure good strong emergency plans are in place, so threads like these stay the rare occurrence they should be.

If anyone hears of the Glen's health improving

or of an attempt to restart the business, please let us know.  For now, even though the website address appears still valid all of the content has apparently been removed.

I'm a one man band the music will stop when I do.I am lucky to have someone who can take care of the biz end WHEN I go down. How long has it been since Atlas put out a turnout? I bet Glen comes back faster! At least I pray he gets well soon.
