I was down in the basement tonight staring at my fascia.   It was pretty easy to put up.   I used the standard 1/8 masonite, mounted smooth side out.   The color was easy enough since I matched the local Free-mo standards (my layout is built to Free-mo height standards so I can use my freemo module as part of the layout).   But I mounted it with bright silver screws.   Something I just happen to have on hand.

I sat there and looked at it.   Should I putty over them and then touch up the paint.   Uggh.   When do I get to the trains?

Then I thought - if thats what someone complains about when they operate my layout, then I'm in pretty good shape.   I got metal wheels to exchange.   I got couplers to upgrade.   Cars to weight.  The list is endless.

Its time to pick my battles and keep moving forward.   There is too much information on the internet.  Too many distractions to divert my modeling time toward something that won't make my operations any better.

I think Tony Koester mentioned something about this in his Design or Operations book.  I should dig that up and paste it on the entrance to the layout room.

Pick your battles is right

Keep working towards getting the trains running. The details of fascia and such will work out in time. Now post some pictures of your progress please. Thomas G.

My Fascia

On my small (18" x 64") switching layout I painted my fascia a dark green. I like the color and it blends with the scenery. I used silver pan head screws. I like the look just as the are. At one point I needed to remove a section of fascia to work on the track and ballast. It was easy to see and remove them and then replace them after the work was complete.

Please yourself...

Personally I don't like the looks of all those screws holding a fascia and I use have used several methods over the years to make my attachment methods invisible. I also dislike fascia painted green, it always has to be flat black for me. But you aren't trying to please me, please yourself!!

The only issue is what th elocal Fremo club set as standards.

If the club standards don't say anything about bright metal screws holding the fascia in place, go ahead and use them.  It is your layout and you need to build it to please you.
