After those steamers got converted I had 3 12 volt motors. What to do? Why mount each one on a truck so they swivel with the truck.

I think I found my next project.

Flywheels are important

Flywheels are important though!

Do the old re-purposed motors spin at identical speeds throughout the voltage range?

It's like the old Bronco with 4.11 gears in front and 4.10 rear

Will the axles be turning the wheels at different speeds in 4 wheel drive? yes, but not by much

Will it matter to you since it's my bronco? no

Flywheels

The motors didn't have flywheels on them when they were in the steamers and they ran very well with slow speed. These motors are Mabuchi motors. Same type of motor used in the diesel drive systems, only this one is single ended. They are 5 pole motors, which run smoother than 3. Their commutator brushes are nothing like what is used in an Athearn motor.

I don't think that there is that much of a speed difference, very little as a matter of fact. When I ran the steamers with the 12 volt motors they ran almost at the same speed. I don't think it would cause that much of a problem.

The reason the front drive of the Bronco was turning faster is so that the rear wheels wouldn't overtake the front in a winter situation. You don't want your back wheels pushing harder than your front wheels are pulling or you'll wind up in the ditch wishing you didn't have 4 wheel drive.

Interesting Project

Will you be able to wire both of the motors to one radio receiver?

R/C control

Yes you could, but only if the current draw is under 1.5 amps total. I think that's what the receivers were rated at. I'd use two receivers since they can be "bound" together and function from the control of one transmitter. This would be how multiple units can be run together.

The R/C products I'm using are the same frequency the fly boys use, 2.4Ghz spread spectrum. One hundred people could run one hundred trains without interfering with each other.
