Walthers HO Crane beginning Weathering Stages

Here's a before picture of my Walthers HO non-powered crane.

IMG_6999.JPG

And here is the beginning stages of weathering. I've only got one layer of acrylic gouache on right now. I need to smooth out the dark grey base frame yet. I won't be able to move forward until I can seal this first coat of paint. Since I paint in my garage here in Iowa that could mean sometime late April. Maybe I should move to the land of "Fruits and Nuts" where the temperature is more moderate all year round?

An oldie

Love this thread every week.

Dri - always been a fan of your layout and weathering. DJ, excellent shot. Len, that scene is really taking shape.  Great start to the weekend!

Here's an older project of mine.  Modeled after BNSF 8625 circa 2010, one of only two 8-40B's remaining in the blue and yellow scheme at that time.  This is one of my favorite locomotives I've done.

Nice So Far Gentlemen!

• Just the coat of gouache improved the crane a ton already Dri!

• Great looking scene Len! I wanna work those industries with that Alco.

• K-Pack......LOVE that DASH 8!  Really, really, really well done.

• Rick, Sweet! Benchwork! Looking forward to this version.

• djherr  I'm quite sure you are trespassing on that right-of-way. And at twilight! That's dangerous man! But nice
shot. Makes that scene look a mile long.

No new photography done this week. But here's a shot from awhile back of a local rolling by the abandoned King Midas flour plant at Union.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine

With 80 deg sunny spring weather here in Northern California this week, I hauled my Shoofly Free-moN module up to the Open Space next to my old elementary school to try and get some natural background & sunlight shots for a project I'm working on.

Here's one of the better "rejects":

Of course, it was only after the shoot that I actually read the camera manual and figured out how to turn off the auto-focus, so the next shoot will "focus" on getting shots for stacking and increasing the depth of field.

More photos in my Free-moN layout construction thread.

Thanks for looking, keep up the great photos you're sharing, and have a great weekend!

I remember that one on the old forums

That's one of my favorite loco's you've weathered. I want.........no I need that on my layout

That models had to have one weathering contests. I just don't see too many weathered as good as that on the proto forums.

Captured this shot of a very tired set of Rock Island loco passing through on the Pacific Western. My friend Rob detailed painted and weathered the models.

Love this thread, but...

...is it just me, or is there just too much great modeling here, week after week?!?  I find it kind of overwhelming, because I want to congratulate people on their outstanding work, week after week, but I just can't keep up with the number of really impressive entries without feeling guilty for the thought of all those I'm missing.  Here we are just a page and a half into it this week, and I've already got a big list of kudos:

Kevin P., that GE is bee-yoo-tee-ful!  And anyone who knows me, knows that I don't use "GE" and "beautiful" in the same sentence lightly.  I don't know if I've ever seen a more realistic diesel weathering job.

Kevin K., I love the weathering on your rolling stock.

M.C., that's a beautiful scene.  I had to check your text again to be sure it was N scale.

Steamfan, really nice looking Rock GEs.  You're really tempting me to backdate my layout.

Len and Guy, I normally gravitate toward modern subjects in this thread, but your steam/transition scenes were both outstanding.

What's new on the Ruphe & Tumbelle

Been working hard the last few months to get the layout ready for an NMRA tour last weekend. Tour went great, lots of nice people and comments, but was kinda' sick of the Rwy. after that. I didn't go downstairs once this week until the ole "weekend photo fun" got me inspired to take a few candid shots of some of the new things we "finished" for the tour.

Always inspiring photos and modeling on photo fun, and today is no different.

The beginnings of the new boiler house, lotsa' piping and googa to come. The article on scratch building steam locos in styrene that was in MRH about a year ago was very help full when forming the boiler, I can't remember the fellows name right now, but thanks! Incidentally the switches control the power to the 4 roundhouse tracks.

Boiler house as it relates to the machine shop/office that had sat half finished for about a year before the tour.

Olson Oil and background buildings were other structures that were half finished for a long time.

Almost picked up

the camera but then started getting the 'artistic eye' for composition, lighting, weathering (or lack of) and such, so I balked.  That's my art degree kicking in- being too self critical.  But I was THIS CLOSE!  Guess I'm just bashful.

I did however improve/repair some track imperfections that were nagging at me.  Not worth taking a picture of however.

I like the progress photos.  Proud of their work and have a vision.  May seem like a long way off to 'completion' but good job so far!

I went another round of trying to hand lay a turnout.  This one turned out a bit better.  I will be putting it on the layout soon...(hopefully)

Some weathered stuff.

Seems like weathered stuff is popular so I'll throw a few in.  I weather using random photos (not always of the exact road name modeled) for reference.  I also weather according to the mid 80's.  You'll see very little to NO graffiti on my hoppers.  Not a lot of rust buckets in the mid 80's too.  I do have a few though but keep them to a minimum.  Many of them are posted here.  Most of the hoppers are Tangent and Exactrail with a few from Intermountain.  Sorry for posting so many photos.  I don't participate in Weekend Photo Fun every week so I decided to just load them up this time.  Thanks.  Tom JohnsonDSCF0040.JPG
