I'm looking to paint and decal some custom MR boxcars I'm building. Can someone point me to the right color or color combination of model paints? I prefer scalecoat II, but will use whatever works. Photo credit = Ron Hawkins

White of course, and what is

White of course, and what is often labeled as "roof brown" is a close match.

Naturally,.this changed with age.

Pic I took in 1993, Medford Oregon.

Personally, I would wait for the correct Atlas car.

Thanks for the replies. I

Thanks for the replies. I need to clarify the kind of car I'm working on is a former all-door car which is nothing like the upcoming plate b atlas car. Have a look at the link I provided with my post. I haven't posted here in a long time, and can't figure out how to have an image show up in the text body, but I'm sure ill get it soon. BTW. The time frame my car will be painted in is early 1980's when the car had fresh paint, which looked much darker than it eventually faded out to be in the late 90's.

Interesting looking box car.  I never realized the all door box cars were converted into double plug door box cars.  It almost looks as if that is a black and white paint job.  This looks like a mid-1970's photo seeing the Evergreen lumber box car in the consist.

Not Actually Box Cars

The All-door cars were not box cars.  They were actually fully enclosed bulkhead flat cars.  They fell out of favor with shippers after de-regulation allowed railroads more latitude in setting fees.  To achieve the full enclosure but still have the whole length of of the car accessible, they had to have a massive beam/roof structure to hold up not only the roof itself, but support the doors as well (the doors actually hung from the roof since there was no side wall to anchor them to).  The beefier structure added so much extra weight that the cars were highly expensive for the railroads to handle.  Before deregulation, the roads were constrained to the official fee schedule and could not recoup the extra cost.  After deregulation, the fees charged to move these cars shot up to reflect the actual cost and most shippers decided that was too much.  They abandoned the cars in droves.

To my knowledge MR used the same white and brown scheme throughout its existence.  The brown in the linked photo looks darker, probably due to grime and the side depicted being the shadowed side.
