arrrggghhh!

I have been trying to find a source for two cornerstone kits for almost six weeks. I'm trying to find the Nort Shore Refinery kit, and the Modern Amtrak station one as well. They're both retired and the only place I've been able to locate them is on E-Bay. I guess that I'm just not very adept at the whole bidding thing, as I've lost out on both items twice. It's kind of good news and bad news, though. Had I won, the prices were outrageous (when including shipping), but I am disappointed in not acquiring them. The station is almost an exact replica of the Amtrak station here in Port Huron and would have been a perfect fit on my track plan. Hmmm, is exact replica from the department of redundancy department? Anyway, I think I'm just fed up with that E-Bay process. After watching some other items that I was interested in, there doesn't seem to be any better deals than I get from NHS, M.B.Kleins, or Wholesaletrains on the internet, and they're all brick and mortar with good reps.

So, I'm attaching a couple of pics by way of updates on my layout progress. Please forgive the clutter, the place is a mess (I think that came from an old movie or something?).

Bidding on E-Bay

You have to wait until the last min. Have three windows open to place bids and place one every 15 seconds it is the only way you will get an item that has interest.

Be sure to wait until last min.

PS if those are altas switches you can fip the throw bar to outer side where they will work better with more space in tight locations.

3 Way Switch

Taking another look at your yard, you could add alot of track length if you use a three way switch to start. Then a left or right off of center. Same approach as you go down the later. Put a switch on siding after the latter switch.  This is the way many of the 1-1 do it.

Bidding on eBay...

I should offer a service.  I seldom lose an item I really want.  I am just like a vulture...circling my prey...waiting...

Definately never bid until the last minute of an auction.  It's better not to let anyone know you are even interested.  Then be prepared to bid again in the last ten seconds of the auction.  Of course, entering a high maximum bid works well too, but you may pay more by doing that.

3-way TO

Hi Art, and thanks for the idea about the three way switch. I didn't think of it until your suggestion as I was seeing the entrance only from the left (IE. top of the photo) of the yard. But you're right, using the three way at the right (bottom of the pic) would indeed allow for more track length. Sometimes we just can't see the trees because of the the forest! The yard is laid out basically like the Tappan Yard (CN/GTW) here in Port Huron just West of the St. Claire river tunnel connecting to Sarnia, On. (with a little selective compression that is). I'm planning for a turning wye on the left side of the photo (the turn-table was torn out some years ago) that will double as a spur servicing Meuller Brass Co. and the Dunn paper plant.  Again thanks for the suggestion and I'll give it a try.              Gerry S.

PS. Yeah, I am using Caboose ground throws and I just trim those bars and run small mil wire between the roadbed and the track and the ground throws.

e.bay

Thanks for the link Foster. Joined the other day and voila, I found three members wanting to sell the refinery kits (and cheaper than the one that sold on E-Bay!). This old duck is a happy camper!                                 Gerry S.

I'm almost sure My small town Hobby shop Has the North shore Kit

I didn't see your post until today June 30th at 7:15 P.M.  This afternoon I dropped buy the little hobby shop here in my little town in "Winchester Virginia". I haven't been there for about 3 months and I wanted to see what was new on the shelves. I'm not Positive But, I believe he still has a North Shore Refinery model on the top shelf as well as a number of other discontinued Cornerstone Models. Since I'm on Vacation until July13th I'll have time to run over there tomorrow and see if that's the refinery he has up on the top shelf. If it is the north shore Refinery I'll have him put in the back for me. I'll post the price here tomorrow and You can decide if you want me to pick it up for you. Since your one of the MRH readers and Blogger I'll give you the exact price and then find out the shipping. I don't require any profit or want any. I know how it is to want a model they don't make any more.

Have you tried UpBids?

UpBids is a sponsor Model-Railroad Hobbyist. Why not see what they have listed? It never hurts to visit an advertiser's website even if you don't end up buying at that particular time. Why? Because it shows the advertiser/supporter that they are getting something for the money they pay to MRH.

kit

Hi Dan, and thanks for the response. I got lucky with my minor rant about E-Bay. First a subscriber to MRH responded and has the kit I'm looking for, and I took the advice from another and joined the HO yard sale group where I was able to find two of the refinery kits. I'm still looking for the Amtrak station as that one seems to be a tad rare. Anyway, I have a plan B in mind if I don't find the depot kit. Again, thanks for your response.     Gerry S.
