I've finally reached the point of needing to build tunnels - the blog entry below shows my portal-painting attempts and roughed in scenery.  It's been a load of fun, and yet another new skill to work on.

WOW - cardstock?

They look so good - did you really do those with printed cardstock?

P.S. Dolores is very painful - literally (if I remember my Spanish).

Nice!

The cardstock comment threw me off - I was looking at the photos thinking "There's no WAY that's cardstock!!!"... Then when I re-read your post, I realized the portals are Chooch castings and the TUNNEL LINER is cardstock!

At any rate, your portals look really great, and the cardstock tunnel liner looks pretty convincing to me. Great job!

Re-read posts after sundown

Thank you, stokes. Now I understand - I really should have read it again, before commenting. They look good regardless of construction technique.

Portals and cardstock

Thanks.  Yes - the liners (only) are cardstock.  With the scenery finished, they should be dark and the cardstock (hopefully) should be plenty to sell the illusion.

There is another portal, in an awkward area leading into hidden staging, where I had to use a two-track portal.  Because it's so wide, I've put an actual rock wall in place for the lining.  My thought there is that, up close, people will see a 3d rock wall inside the tunnel.  Then, when looking at the smaller, darker, and farther-away portals w/ the cardstock, their minds will just assume it's the same thing.  That's the idea anyway... have to see if it actually works.

I'll post some photos of the other portal once it's a bit further along.
