A Few New Details Added

This week I surveyed the pile of detail parts I've collected for this project, and started with the basic Details West detail kit #230 for this model. I installed the traction motor cables on the metal frame, but I still need to install the straight cables on the underside of the plastic shell. The instructions called for a 0.040" thick piece of styrene to be glued to the underside of the walkway to be used as a base for mounting the straight cable sections. I just cemented the styrene in place tonight, so I want to wait a day for it to cure before adding the cables.

I also added a couple of other detail parts from the kit, like the bell, the handbrake chain pulley beam (near the rear bolster, just "above" the traction motor cables in the photo) and the emergency fuel shutoff valves (on the bottom edge of the walkway sill on either side of the body shell).

Here's a photo:

In the background, you can see a strip of styrene I was using to test paint samples. This is my only SP engine so far, and I don't plan to re-paint the whole thing, so I was trying to create a color match from some paint that I happened to have on hand. I started mixing some Model Master Gunship Gray with flat black, and eventually got to a "close enough" color through trial and error. Fortunately, plain old Testors Flat Red seemed to be a pretty good match for the SP scarlet.

This is a great blog. I've a bunch of C44's and AC4400's that I would like to start adding details to. Besides using photos to help you place parts, how did you figure out what those parts are? Do you have a reference source to help you identify what each part is? I find that to be one of the biggest challenges in adding details.
