Hi every one,

I'm starting on a couple of the 40' flat car kits and was checking the truck parts. According to the instructions, they are Athearn Bettendorf Trucks.

My supply of Kadee 33" metal wheels are too tight in the side frames, so I was wondering if the standard Inter Mountain brand would fit better.

Has any one replaced the wheels in the Tichy #4021 kit, and if so what wheels fit the best?

Thanks to all,

Drew

Dear Drew, I've just

Dear Drew,

I've just completed building one of the "6 packs" of these cars, in my case I replaced the stock plastic wheelsets with Proto2k HO 33" wheelsets, which IIRC were a drop-in fit.

IIRC I have tried Kadees in these trucks previously, and can't explicitly recall having issues.

A quick check of the Kadee wheelsets to ensure the restriction is not on the wheelset-side of the equation is worth the time, (IE casting flash line on the axle point),

then I'd check the inside face of the axlebox/bearing area (the side facing the wheel), to ensure that the truck doesn't have any errant flash which could be causing the drag. (IIRC I had to clean up the axlebox area on most all of the trucks in my particular kit, due to excess plastic "flash" between the axlebox and the bolster area).

I don't have a "truck tamer", but in extreme cases, a quick twizzle with the point of a mini rat-tailed or triangular file in the axle holes can make the difference bdetween "restricted" and "nicely rolling" wheelsets...

I can check the set-of-6 tonight after work, (I have just had them out of their box again to do some weathering, so know exactly where they are ), and confirm the specific wheelsets and trucks in use, if that helps...

Truck Turner

You might want to invest in one of these. Friend of mine swearers by it.

Bite the bullet!!

Hello Prof,

I have inspected the plastic trucks, and found them to all be in in good shape, and a gentle little twist with a couple little pointy objects, didn't improve the rolling issues at all. They would all just not roll with the Kadee wheels in the Athearn trucks. So . . .

I found some Kadee trucks c/w wheels, on sale, so I broke down and just ordered new trucks complete!

Thanks for your time,

Intermountain Wheels

I have several of the said cars.   Intermountain 33" wheels fit just fine.
