Like a lot of other model railroaders I have a number of locomotives that need to be repacked in new boxes. I have a dozen or so boxes which over the years have been damaged by moisture and water damage. I did buy a couple of paper boxes from the local stationary store but they just look cheap.

I just stumbled on a great source of what are very nice display and storage boxes for a number of my engines which require boxes. With a bit of work cigar boxes are in my opinion excellent display/storage boxes. A light sanding and off comes the cigar labeling, and a trip to the local fabric store for the foam which costs about a dollar and a half a box.

The tobaconist being the supplier of the boxes. If you have ever checked the prices of the replacement boxes for brass engines you will be shocked.

Very nice indeed!

My present preferred box is a cardboard mailer-box that allows for 3/4" foam on the sides and 1/2" foam on the top and bottom, roughly 14" long.  I put the locomotive in a piece of plastic wrap such that I can pick the locomotive up with the plastic wrap, hence it nestles in the foam safely while the plastic insures no details get lodged into the foam.  It further allows me to store my steam engines with the tender connected.

Very nice boxes, though, I may have to give them a try...
