I was reading a post on ken's blog where he cut up a toy car and modified it. http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/5798

In it, he mentions that these cars are typically out of proportion.  I compared a few I have to some better quality cars I have and sure enough the toy stuff is higher.  My question is, how do I find out what the height on a typical toy car should be, if i wanted to tackle something like this?

Also, I have some buildings that were included in a ebay purchase i mad.   Looking at them and comparing them to a known Ho scale building I have they seem small.  Is there a rule of thumb way to determine the scale of a building?  Maybe using the height of a typical real life door as a starting point?

This site has the dimensions

This site has the dimensions of a huge number of  cars (a lot I never heard of) and a lot of other info on them.  The dimensions are metric.  I found the Rambler Station wagon I had in college 47 years ago.

Typical exterior doors in the USA today are 36" x 80".  Door sizes may vary depending on era and location.  A lot of plastic model kits are based on European prototypes and some others Japanese (particularly N Scale).  Their proportions may be different from US buildings.
