I did a whole mountain using Joe Fugate's dirt method and it looks fantastic, moved on to the next section and ther are issues and I wonder if they could be caused by my using old plaster or hydracal by mistake as I have containers of each on the work table (even have patch-all but I know I didn't use that by mistake). The dirt dose not want to stick well to the plaster cloth (in fact in some areas it will not stick at hardly at all and it has a mildew whitish look to parts (no, it is not mildew). Do you think the mistake was as stated or something else??????

Sounds like bad plaster to me

Sounds like bad plaster to me. I also don't recommend hydrocal as a base for zip texturing. The stuff is too dense and doesn't mix with pigment as well as good old Plaster of Paris.

Plaster of Paris is inexpensive, don't try to cut corners by using sub-standard products. Get the real stuff, apply thin layers of zip texturing, and prewet the base terrain plaster well first before applying - soak it is the goal, don't be stingy with the prewetting.

Thank you, that's what I

Thank you, that's what I thought, The old plaster was just sitting there and I bet it was used by accident, luckily all the difficult areas were done with the good, I already thew out the old plaster!
