Hey guys,

Here's a bird's-eye view and a railfan's view of Western Maine Railroad Alco RS11 7605 (former PC) as it approaches White Mountain Jct. on the Allagash Androscoggin Sub. in April 1980. The Western Maine is a shortline that assumed operation of the former Allagash White Mountain Branch. It's a one-horse railroad with 7605 the marginal shortline's sole power. The Allagash main runs on the other bank of the South Branch Sandy River, and can be seen passing the boarded-up station at Weld in the close-in shot. There was a wash-out here last spring, hence the rip-rap on the embankment.

The 7605 has a bit of a story behind it. This loco was a Penn Central custom job done by modeler Jim Sixx many years ago. The project was featured in one of the magazines (Prototype Modeler??). Anyway, it ended up with his friend Mike Rose and was recently brokered to the Allagash and then to the Western Maine. It still wears the original PC white number on the cab.

Mike:

I Joe has requested articles from you, might I suggest the topic on how you model the stream in the photos

Stream

Thanks for the suggestion Don. I think I'd cover that on the next Allagash Outside the Box scenery project, or possible as a stand-alone article.

Awesome!

I am lost for words.  I checked out Webster's Unabridged and still can't find one word to truly express what your photos say.  It is amazing to compare the many well designed professionally constructed layouts being build today and put them up against John Allen's Gorre & Daphetid.  He was a pioneer in the field of bringing model railroading to a level we classify as Art.  His legacy remains today despite the fact he passed away in January 1973 and many model railroad tycoons continue to use his innovative ideas when planning their pikes and perhaps we owe it to him for his continued guidance if only in spirit.

I for one hope to see many future articals in MRH.  Thank you for sharing your work with us.

Excellent Modeling!!

Mike,

Been a big fan for a long tome, have several of your videos as well. Your techniques are awesome and work well. I am currently building a Rutland layout set around 1960 in the fall and plan on using a lot of your techniques. Many thanks for all the wonderful talent you share with us!!
