Nice Tom...

That is a great photo, love the weathering on the F units. I can see a "Yes it's a Model" banner in that photo! :D

Something like above with the "Yes It's a Model" added to the right side...

The oil depot is a Lehigh Valley Models kit, while the three structures behind it are all scratchbuilt from pictures in old RMC's and MR's.

NYC - PRR Crossing near Meesville

Today I worked on a small N-scale module "The NYC - PRR crossing". I added the grass and small bushes. It should be finished this week for a three day show. I'love deadlines . The two PRR tracks on the bridge are still missing...

A little bit of Narrow Gauge Steam

I thought I would post a few pictures of Narrow Gauge Steam.

In this pic, a Mudhen K-27 built by Baldwin in 1903, moves through the big timber area on the Slim Gauge Guild layout in Pasadena CA. The scale is Sn3 (S scale 3 foot narrow gauge).

I built the gondolas from PBL kits and painted and weathered them with Star Brand paints.

The engine is brass and made by PBL http://www.p-b-l.com and has a Tsunami installed in the tender that controls the motor, sound, and backup light. A TCS function only decoder was installed in the boiler to control the lights.

Some Colorado Narrow Gauge Steam

In this pic, a Denver and Rio Grande Western K-36 class moves over a wooden trestle on the Slim Gauge layout in Pasadena CA. Baldwin built 10 of the K-36, 3 ft locomotives for the D&RGW in 1925.

The engine is brass and made by PBL http://www.p-b-l.com and has a Tsunami installed in the tender that controls the motor, sound, and backup light. A TCS function only decoder was installed in the boiler to control the lights.

I assembled the boxcars from PBL kits and used Star Brand paints to paint the boxcars and weathered them with watercolor pencils. The scale is Sn3 (S scale 3 foot narrow gauge).

The trestle was scratch built by club members, very accurate to a trestle that existed in Gallager Loop area in Colorado.

My next project

I've decided that it's time to finish building my Branchline Fallen Barn kit. I started this over a year ago and it has just been collecting dust. I have now got the diorama base made. The foundation is craved Styrofoam. Since I took these pictures I've finished installing the floor and I am now working on getting the plane crash to look right. barn1.jpg

F Unit Comments

Jas, John and steamfan1211- thanks for the kind comments. It was the recent photos of Joe Atkinson's beautiful MILW f-unit that inspired me to finally finish the weathering on these units (I'd provide a link to the post but I can't seem to find it). I used washes of artist's acrylics and Windex, powders and an air brush to achieve the effects you see. There are more photos of the units on the CWE blog. I worked from photos of MILW and CNW units as the color schemes are similar to mine. For me, there's no substitute for using photos in order to achieve realistic weathering, even if you're proto-freelancing.

F-units

Tom, I really enjoyed your pic of the F-units as well.  The types of projects I've been tackling lately haven't been very "inspirational", so it was nice to hear of the story behind these.  Thank you!

A K-28 moves up the canyon area

I thought I would post a few pictures of Narrow Gauge Steam.

In this pic, a K-28 built by Schenectady Locomotive Works in 1923, moves up the canyon area on the Slim Gauge Guild layout in Pasadena CA. The scale is Sn3 (S scale 3 foot narrow gauge).

I built the gondola from a PBL kit and painted and weathered them with Star Brand paints.

Waiting

Missabe's RDC3 #1 running south out of Virginia has to bide it's time as the DW&P way freight locos push past the diamond at Largo Tower after leaving a string of cars at the interchange.  Missabe runs "wrong main".

Models are LL P1000 RDC, and Atlas and LL RS-11s.  Photo background.
