Ok here goes. Dont know if it is ok to ask this or not but i am having a hard time designing my layout. If I post the diminsions of my layout can some one with xtrack cad design a layout i can work with? What i have is the Scenic Ridge Layout and want to expand it. The benchwork for the Scenic Ridge is 3 by 6 feet. I have another module on the lower right section that is 1 by 4 ft. Then on the lower left section i have another module that is 4 by 5 ft. It extends 1 ft past the right hand side of the 3 by 6 section. These is n scale. I will try and find a program i can draw this benchwork area so it make more sense. The Scenic Ridge section can be changed. The 1 by 4 will be a Yard and function as a small staging area but for now just one way in. The 4 by 5 ft section will be a town/industry area. This id DCC. And yes i am a newbe. Just having trouble tying the 2 sections in to the Scenic Ridge section. Thanks for any help in advance.

It's definitely okay to ask for help!

Jack,

First of all, you're more than welcome to ask for help on any topic.  However, you might fund that more information will give better results.  Specifically, if you cold post a track plan and show the areas you're thinking of expanding into, along with some idea of what you're thinking of doing in those areas, it will help give a starting point.  Even a rough hand drawn plan would help considerably.

I'm going to go out on a limb and make a radical suggestion.  Don't expand your current layout.  Salvage what you can (structures, rolling stock, possibly track, some scenery, etc.) and start over from scratch.  You seem to have a lot more space, so consider making the most efficient use of that space.  If you've read Joe Fugate's column regarding chainsaw layouts, you'll have an idea of what I'm suggesting, and why.  Your skills have probably improved since you built your first layout, and you have the opportunity to apply those skills to an even better layout this time around.

Try this:  Make a list of givens and druthers like you would for a new layout.  The only rule is that nothing on the current layout counts as a given just because it's already there.  Then compare - does the current layout with extensions satisfy those givens and druthers well?  If so, extend it.  If not, replace it.  Just don't settle for less than you're capable of just to save a little labor in the short term.
