Hi guys,

I have the above from Walthers (the old kit version, not the newer metal version) and they come with plastic wheels.  I want to replace the wheels with metal ones but I checked the size and they are a bit smaller than 33" in diameter.  I believe the prototype uses 28" wheel.  Is this correct?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

33" and 38"

Assuming you're talking about the well cars (can't recall if Thrall made the prototype for Walthers spine cars), the prototype cars have 33" wheels on both ends of the set and 38" on the shared trucks between platforms.  Here's a link to a Trainorders thread that discusses the topic:

Oh no! :-(

Well, this means that I'll have to modify the shared trucks to accept the 38" wheels!

Thanks a lot for the info Joe,

Chris

You could likely add 36"

You could likely add 36" wheels and no one would be the wiser.

Hmmmm...

...interesting!  I didn't think about that!  And since I already have 33" and 36" at home, it may be the way to go!   Since 1 1/2" is .017" in HO, it won't make a big difference visually.

Thanks,

Chris
