I started this journey by calling it A Beginner's Beginnings.  This has led me to to shorten the name to The B&B Railroad. With this in mind, I was contemplating about what would be the best industry to model.  I thought, "What starts with a b.....BEER starts with a B, and I like beer!!!!!! Hmmm, what else......BREAD, I also like bread!!!!"  This should work.

Additionally, I have a friend whose last name is Burnett who is trying to make his own beer and his wife makes really good bread.  It's official, the industry will be Burnett's Bread and Bear.

To keep the cost of this model to a minimum, I am going to designing my own card stock model.

Cont...

So the design of the Beer and Bread wonderland needed to some how get out of my head and onto paper.  I was going to use Photoshop elements to do this but then remembered I suck at that program.  However, I do have AutoCAD, which I suck less on.  I figured I could at least create a mock up to see if what was in my head will translate well onto the paper.

I wanted a long load dock for which I could spot four of the five cars needed for the inglenook puzzle with the final car being spotted next to a bumped out section of walls with large windows. Below, you can see what I was able to come up with.

This is in a very basic form with no colors or textures.  I was planning on the doors and windows being recessed (similar to those seen at  Clever Models) to give some dimension. At this point, I have six pages that will be used to build the model, but that may increase.  I mocked these up and set them next to string of cars to see if I was on the right track. I laid these out in 1:1 dimensions and then scaled them down in the viewport.  Turns out, I had the bump out scale wrong, but that is why I wanted to test it.

A little blurry but hopefully you get the idea.

With the design looking good, I figured out how to add texture.  Using  CGtextures, I was able to download brick, windows, doors, concrete, metals....you name it. With some creative editing, I was able to layout the following:

I know there is going to be a lot of repeating textures.  I am hoping I will be able to dull some of that out with a little weathering, but since I have never tried that before, it will be another learning experience.  I think I will have a little bit of touch up to do on this model before it is ready to print. At this point, I think I will be gluing it to some foam board to give it some rigidity.  I still have a pile of wood sitting in the garage waiting to be turned into some bench work.  Once this is done, I can get some final dimensions for the industry. I will keep you up to date.

Thanks for looking.

Texture added

I fixed the scale of the bump out in the building and added texture.  When I get some extra time, I will attempt to build a completed model.

Update

My family is out of town so I am able to get some work done. I decided to work on my card stock model of the industry. I have a little ways to go but I wanted to update everyone on my progress. I hope to have some more and soon. Thanks for looking.

B&B

Very nice.  Would you consider submitting this for an article?  Its a little outside of the box as far as normal structures go.

You could call it

"Yeast Industries", since both Beer and Bread are based upon yeast....

Article

I'll keep an article in mind.  I will need to be more diligent in taking progress photos along the way.
