Does anybody remember this RMC contributor?

Thu, 2009-05-28 11:48 — LarryC
There was an author who wrote many scenery articles for RMC
back in the late 1970's to early 1980's, and his work got a lot of
cover shots on many RMC issues. He modeled SP Tehachapi Loop
scenes, and used to model tall California golden grasses rather convincingly
for the time. What was this author's name, and is he still in the hobby?
Like Joe Fugate, this modeler used photographs of actual scenes, and this
is why his work was a step above the rest.
Thanks in advance!

Talking about Jim Haire
One of my favorite senes he did was the Santa Susana Pass in Chatsworth CA. (MRC Feb 76.) He got the Chatsworth rock pile, trees and grass right on. I was always inspired by his modeling works, as I model the SP in Southern California, 1960s.
Could you be speaking of
Dave Frary or John Lukesh or maybe Jack Burgess.
Jack reminds me of Joe!
Dave Frary took a few cover shots and did a number of articles on scenery
John Lukesh Did covers and articles. in fact in April 1971 He did an Article called
"Foliage Materials... Use a Variety". His outlook of scenery for model Railroads was see quote below:
"One key to more realistic Scenery is to follow nature's example and use a wide selection of materials for various foliage needs he listed these as scenery materials.
Natural Materials = Lichen, Asparagus fern, air fern, preiser fern, Nursery moss, yarrow weed, feathers, horse hair, clean dirt, twigs and weeds.
Other Materials = Foam rubber chunks, ground foam rubber, cotton balls, steel wool, hemp twine, paint brushbristles, flocking, yarn, sawdust, sifited gravel, paper, card board, wood, wire, and plastic (tree kits).
this 4 page artical tells how he uses each of the materials to produce different shrubs, trees, brush and other vegetation for detailing your scenery.
Two other are Lynn wescot and Russ Porter.
One last one that I remember was Jack Burgess he did an artical in RMC april 1976 on how to duplicate large expanses of california grass lands and then he up dated his systen in the Augest 1986 RMC called Modeling California's Golden Grass. he talks about electrostatic grass and how to remove the sheen and get a more realistic look.
could this be the name your looking for? Jack Burgess.

Jim Haire....That's the man!
Yes, Jim Haire was modeling SP scenes that just 'looked right.'
I'm curious to know if he's still in the hobby?
I'll Google, and post anything of interest in reply to this topic.
Thanks,
-Larry
Steamage you have me
Steamage you have me comfused? What is MRC?
there is MR= Model Railroader and RMC Railroad Model Craftsman and I looked in both of those magazines Feb 76 and didn't see Jim Haire.
I'm interrested because I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and climbed all over The rocks in Chatsworth and wood love to see the model of them

Here's the RMC issue's front cover.(Jan. 1976)
Jim Haire did a few SP scenes, aand I believe these were just dioramas,
as I don't think Jim Haire had a layout. I used to read up on everything by
this man, and Jim was doing some fine scenery work over everyone else at
that time.(IMHO)
This is RMC, January 1976 issue. There's one on eBay right now for sale.
This pic is sort of clunky, but you can get a general idea of his work:
Thanks Larry I have it as
Thanks Larry I have it as well as all issues of RMC what confused me is looking in Feb 1976 and not seeing it and then trying to figure out what MRC was

Phenomenal Work! My all time
Phenomenal Work!
My all time favorite set of articles was the coaling tower by Wayne Weslowski in about RMC 1988, starting around March. Show a little boy what can be scratchbuilt, and the wonder never ends!!
I met the guy in 2007, and I'll say the man is as good as his work. If I recall I also worked with his neice in the mineralogy lab. She does good work in the mineralogy field now. Kind of a small world!!
Sorry, not RMC but is MRC.
Old age has caught up with my typing skills. MRC at one time had a lot of Western States modeling articles on SP, WP and short lines, but I quit buying the magazine because it started to concentrate on Eastern roads. Don't even have a clue what in in the magazine nowadays, they lost me as a reader many years ago when the historical society magazines started publishing, got more bang for the buck from the SPH&TS (Southern Pacific Historical and Technical Society) magazine.
Okay, have MRH to remember correctly. . .
Ah yes.......
That brings back memories. I remember staring at this particular issue for hours back in Junior High when I was first getting into this all consuming habit. To me, it was some of the most realistic scenery I had seen at the time. I think I still have this issue somewhere. Thanks for sharing.
