Is Athearn's SP bay window caboose a C-40-4, or C-40-5?

Thu, 2009-05-21 03:34 — LarryC
Here are 2 Athearn cabooses compared to SP's C-40-4 bay window caboose.
Is Athearn's model based on the prototype's C-40-4 (as shown),
or SSW's/SP's C-40-5?
There are a few windows shown on the prototype that have been plugged.

SP C-40-4
Larry,
Athearn's long-available bay window caboose represents a C-40-4. The key difference between that class and the next (C-40-5) class was the fuel tank--as built. The C-40-4 used a rectangular fuel tank (seen in both model photos with fuel gauge, also VERY similar to the battery box in size and shape), whereas the C-40-5 production featured a cylindrical fuel tank, attached with three tank bands, under the bay window. Tony Thompson's excellent Volume 2 on SP Cabooses will give you more details.
The C-40-4 is a good, large class of long-serving cabooses. Two hundred cabs, many rebuilt in the 1970's. Though the model has been showing its age, it IS available.
Hope this helps,
Beaver Bill
Here are the C-40-4's compared to C-40-5s
Thanks for the input, Bill. Here are 2 examples each of the SP's
C-40-4s, compared to the C-40-5s.
In comparison, do these look correct to you? Lots of similarities between them.
SP C-40-4 vs -5 Images
Larry,
The images are "correct" of course. The potential reason for your confusion is that by this late in their careers both classes had significant modifications. Note the different stacks, the movement of the end markers (from rooftop tripod "frog eyes" to end of roof single lamp), removal of roof running board and ladders and the window blanking you already noted. Also note the C-40-5's have lost their distinctive under bay cylindrical fuel tanks. This is all to say one can get from the Athearn model of a "production" C-40-4 to either that class or the next as seen later in life. This is why we model from photos, trying to be careful to select images appropriate to the year(s) we are modeling.
Rob Sarberenyi (runs the SP Yahoo list) has posted images of work done for him by Clyde King (modeler extraordinaire...) using the Athearn model to create a C-40-5. I'm a bit hesitant posting Rob's site, but you might find it via the SP Yahoo List if you are a member. From the look of these images, it looks like you found your way to the "Espee Modelers Page", a great resource.
Good Luck with your modeling!
