Over the weekend Jason Shron released a very well done short video about the full size replica of a VIA Rail passenger car he has built in his basement...

Its a pretty impressive project...

Here is a link to a story Global TV in Toronto did on the project earlier today...

I showed this

to my kids on separate occasions.  My boy was giggling all the way through and said, "He's crazy.  You could never do that."  And about 10 seconds later, Jason says one of the two things you need is to be insane, to which my son laughed even harder.  But he thought it was pretty cool and would love to visit it.

My daughter, on the other hand, said, "I would NOT be that understanding of a wife."  I'll be sure to tell her boyfriends that.

How very cool!

Now I just need to build a basement to house such a project!

A stronger man than I...

What I don't understand is how he had the discipline to finish the coach project before starting the layout he wants to build in the same basement.  I'm looking forward to seeing his model of Toronto Union Station and Spadina Shops come to life, since those were among my favorite railfan locations when I was (much) younger.  A layout featuring early VIA operations holds a special facination for me.

Car in the basement

Now if he could convince Tim to make the track assembly fixture!

You know, I have to say that if I had bought a complete car,..

I'd buy a place to put it all in. Great Job though and it rings his bells and isn't hurtin' no-one !  But I'd keep the whole car...

Lesson # 465.2

Don't wear your kilt whilst fixing anything under the layout with company present.

This has gone viral of sorts

in the National media in Canada.  From our public broadcaster:

http://www.cbc.ca/player/News/ID/2324301953/

And Global News:

http://www.globaltoronto.com/feature/6442783777/story.html

And Global has given an extended tour of the train:

http://www.globaltoronto.com/video/tour+of+replica+via+train+built+in+basement/video.html?v=2323834012#web+exclusives

The best part is when you see all his models lined up on the shelf - CBC even talks about building them but unfortunately doesn't mention the name Rapido Trains.

@Dave

Thanks for posting the links to other videos!

I imagine all the networks were avoiding giving Rapido any FREE advertising by mentioning the company in the news report.  The Rapido name does show up briefly when Jason is showing off his reproduction ticket folders in the Global extended report.

When my wife watched the first Global report that Tim linked, she said, "Oh cool, another wife that gets it".

Very cool Jason!

Nick Muff

This is not unlike Nick Muff up in Washington State who has, not just a replica pax car in his basement, but also a large HO layout and a real F unit cab (bought from a scrap yard and placed in the basement before the rest of the house was constructed over it).

Very Similar, George

Jason's next project is the HO layout in the basement which he will soon be starting.  His website is now up and running to see the progress and plans for that.

@George

You are right George, this is not unlike Nick Muff.

Nick Muff's basement is very cool too!

What is unlike Nick Muff, is that Jason Shron is also the man behind MRH sponsor, Rapido Trains Inc.

How cool to have the space

How cool to have the space and the understanding spouse.  I would think that if I put a big screen TV toward the ceiling in the front.....and called it a movie theater room I might get away with such.  Nice work on the train.
