Great shot

That's some excellent modeling, Driline, esp. like the weathering.

Here is a shot of a transfer building and scenery I worked on over the holiday break.  Notice how my wife's green walls and antique mirrors add to the realism of the scene, lol...!!!

I started to put together the

I started to put together the Ste-Rosalie Grain Elevator.

It is kitbash from a commonly available  kit and cut to fit. Of course details need to be added, then painting the structures, weathering it and applying the appropriate decals/namesake for the prototype situated at that particular location.

Industry Progress

I took a break from doing more scenery to concentrate on the Vickers Land and Livestock complex. This is the first scene for visitors as they enter the door of my train room, so I thought it might be nice to get it looking mostly complete.

Here's what you see now upon entering the room.  This industry combines several kits, plus some various scratchbuilt components.  The vertical tanks are from Chooch, while the pump house and unloading apparatus are from a Walthers Interstate Fuels kit.

I still need to build some kind of truck loader for liquids, and probably a fence around this end of the property.

This is the "front office" side of things.  The metal warehouse is a Pikestuff kit I originally built as an enginehouse.  I recently re-purposed the structure by adding an office scratched from styrene alongside a new roll door, plus a new foundation, paint job, downspouts and the 70s pop machine with genuine fake wood trim.  This building is supposed to look like fairly recent construction, so received a minimum of weathering.

The wood building is a Dyna Model feed mill with a scratchbuilt addition from wood sheet and strip.  I left off the front porch roof and the narrow space precluded using the kit's loading docks. In place of the kit roof I used laser cut paper shingles from Wild West Models, while the addition got tar paper.  Both structures still need window glass and blinds/shades.  Outdoor lighting fixtures are planned too.

Finally, this long, narrow end of the place looked too empty, so I threw in this shed where pallets are stored.  It provides a place to stage a fork truck and suggest additional activity at the site.

Driline: The caboose looks

Driline: The caboose looks real nice. Great weathering. Nice scene as well.

djherr, nice scenery. chessie_077 nice shot!  PApat again, nice scene and greenery (like the trees) and the how do you call it  rock outcrop/abutment/elevation by the track.

wp8thsub, it's looking real good. I like the feel of the scene, it is open not clutter, light not dark and the weathering is subtle not overwhelming.  Further your ballast for the mainline and the spur are both very well done.

Wow!

This thread gets better every week- some really incredible modeling!

Driline- those figures and the rust effects on the back of the truck look fantastic. Nice work!

DJ- absolutely gorgeous scene- the water is particularly effective.

chessie_077- nice, low angle shot- the scenery looks great.

PAPat- nice shot- the coloring and weathering on the retaining wall looks great!

MLW- that's going to be an impressive structure when it's complete. Keep us posted on your progress. And the weathering on the rolling stock is very well done.

Rob- I'll second Jason's comments, and how did you do that gravel road? It's one of the best I've seen- nice work!

Frank Titman

The major scales have had their heroes such as Allen, Ellison, McClelland, etc., but S scale has had theirs too, although they have existed in relative obscurity. One such giant among us is Frank Titman. Frank is getting on in years and can't host or attend Lehigh Valley S Gaugers meetings any more. His freelanced railroad is the Spiral Hill RR and the LVSG club honored him by issuing a specially decorated hopper that he himself designed.
I just acquired one and posed it with one of the kits that Frank produced as a Lehigh Valley Models kit. The company has a new owner and still makes the mine kit in O scale as well as S.

Great looking scene. That's gonna be a winner when you're done. One thing though. That fugly green chevy Vega. Man what a piece of crap those were in the 70's. My buddy had one and we used to drive that metal trash can around town with paper bags over our head so we wouldn't get laughed at. Ok so we got laughed at even with the bags off but still........

I can't believe you couldn't afford to pay your little plastic people a better salary to purchase something better than that! Geeeshh...

nice stuff

Rob,

that gravel road is spot on.

MLW

the grain elevator reminds me of the one near Buffalo.  A little weathering and lettering and it will be perfect.

Nice weathering of rolling stock

nice stream with deer

etc.

very nice thread.

Roads and Car

Thanks for the comments guys.

The road is fine sand, the same stuff I use for base ground cover.  The wear patterns are brushed onto it with matching acrylic craft paint.  The paint accumulates between the grains to varying degrees, and looks like compacted dirt and dried mud.  My original intent was to scrape the ruts into the surface, but this sand dries so hard that didn't work at all.

Begging your pardon good sir, but that would be a 1977 Ford Pinto!  That would be an almost equally heinous ride.  I had the great fortune of having buddies with both a Vega and a Pinto in the mid-'80s, both wagons.  The Pinto had only one functioning door, making entry and egress quite an experience.

Note in one photo how the boss-type-guy parked his new Impala out back so as not to be seen with the general riff-raff.

Re: Nitrate unloaded...

Sorry, John- not on this one. I needed to get it done before the next operating session. But I do have some more structures to scratch-build that I can hopefully work into an article or two.

Tom, I just noticed your layout's era in your signature for the first time.  Have you ever given any thought to modeling a CWE bicentennial unit?

Nice touch, Roy.  I recall being impressed with his first layout in an article in Model Railroader.

Water Fall

I have finally got my water fall installed. I still have the rapids to put in and lots of foliage to add to the stream. The trestle is just sitting there to give me an idea how it looks with the water fall.
