I am building a concrete coaling tower for a guy that models UP in the era of Challengers and Big Boys.  Thanks to a previous thread, the concrete part is looking ok.  My question is what color to paint all the metal brackets, pulleys, braces, etc.  I don't think they would be all rusty and derelict but not new either.  Did UP have a standard paint scheme for such things?  I am leaning towards black as I think it was fairly cheap, after all it was Mr. Ford's color of choice.  I know UP also painted lots of stuff silver, bridges, water towers, etc.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions,

Colors

Hey Paul,

While I can't say I have seen a coaling tower up close I would think Black could be one color to use and silver would work as well.  Another is the industrial Green that I see used in many plants.  Also I have seen the Red Oxide Primer look used before.

I can't comment on UP paint schemes at all.  Hope to see some pictures when you have a chance!

It's done now.

I went with black on the metal parts and gray on the doors and window frames.  It doesn't look much different in grayscale.  Maybe I should have used more color.  He liked it though so I guess that is what matters.
