So I have a carousel of cooking herbs that has about 18 containers.  I was going to dump them and use it for storage of various items but then it hit me.  Maybe they could be used as scenic items.

Is there a down side to using herbs on the layout?

Thanks

Kevin

Yes, mice

Especially when the mice find they like your Anise that you are using for sugar beets in HO scale.

Edible materials are generally a bad idea

Edible materials are generally a bad idea for model railroad scenery. They attract "critters" and you may live to regret it.

Makes sense

I recall reading about other people using organic material on their layouts.  I just didn't want to be throw it away if it could be useful.

Herbs

I believe it's Jerry Macri who was a big advocate of using expired herbs from the health store. He would open the capsules from herbal supplements and use them because of the different textures. I don't know what (if anything) he did to prevent critters from invading, but his layout is HUGE and I hadn't heard or read of any issues. What about using ground up leaves and other unpreserved natural materials? This thread is making me wonder if I need to do something to those weeds I use for tree making so that I'm not opening the door for "visitors".

I've found they discolour over time

Hi Leroy,

I did some experiments a while back using crushed dried green herbs as leaf material on trees. While they haven't attracted critters but their colour has faded over a relatively short period of time making them less than satisfactory in the long term. I should also add that where I come from we don't tend to have critter problems due to our climate so your experiences may be different.

I know a guy who used herb on his layout. He got so stoned, he ran a brass loco off a siding straight to the floor and...oh wait, you meant herbs. Sorry.

....

At least it's legal here

I'm planning a small switching layout.  Maybe the herbs can be used as ground cover.  I'm sure the layout will be chainsaw anyways so I'm sure I can experiment when I get to it.

Half-truth

I DID know a guy who smoked up and was a modeler. He never ran a brass loco off a siding though (that I know of anyway, LOL). I'll reserve my comments on legal pot.
