I was just looking at the Shoo-Fly module thread, and something caught my eye.  In 1:1 railroading, it's quite common to see the remnants of old wood pilings beneath or beside more modern concrete or steel bridges.  In some cases, the pilings ended slightly above ground level and served as a base for the trestle bents, in others the bents have simply been cut away when the new bridge was built.  But I cannot think of many model bridges which have been treated in this fashion.  Plenty of steel and concrete, and of course plenty of wooden trestles, but how many folks have modeled the remnants of an older bridge near a newer one?

Drill track

I've got one, just so I could use pieces of one of the first models I ever built:  a Campbell trestle kit.

In my world, the trestle crossing a river used to be the mainline out of town, until a flood took the far end away.  The mainline was realigned, and uses a newer two-span steel deck girder bridge.  Meanwhile, the remaining portion of the old trestle serves as the yard drill track.  Portions of bents can be seen in the river bottom.

Pics?  not yet, sorry.  Scenery in that spot is cardboard and tape, with the trestle and abandoned bents removed temporarily.

Remnants of the once glorious past ? How about an old, rotten -

- mine head?

Hi folks,

That´s what I am trying to built. I am modelling in Nn3 - N scale 3 feet between the rails - and have built some mountainous terrain where my narrow gauge trains will have to fight hill and dale.

To get some eye catchers, I decided to scratch built an abandoned mine. It´s not finished by a long time, yet I show a picture or two.

Dude I'm a newbie. You mean that mine isn't finished. I'll never get my simple farm country layout done.

Modeling of remnants - bridges

One excellent example of this modeling is on Bernie Kempinski's USMRR layout - the Potomac Bridge:

bridge

The local council decided to make one of those into a shared footbridge round my way. I used to go to TAFE on the old bridge beforehand, walking my bike across the bare wood deck. Now it is sealed, with concrete panel deck, side fence and a sealed path leading up to each end, it is nearly impossible to cross, as every smeghead in town with a rod in his hand (in more ways than one, I'm sure) camps out fishing, setting up camp the entire width of the bridge, choking the path with eskies, tackle boxes and camp furniture with noone to tell them not to apart from a sign, and leaving discarded fishing gear all over the path.
