Good explanation Joe!

I really enjoyed this writeup.  Your breakdown of the Traffic Control form and authority was well done.  An ops session like this sounds fun!

Excellent article. I don't have a layout yet, but hope to one day. The info in this article will be of great help to me if and when I get a layout built.

Make running trains more fun?

How about a multi tracked slot car type road racing course and see who can get their trains around it the fastest? ....DaveB

"He with the Athearn Hustler wins? "

Hi Jeff, I don't know if Hustler has enough flanges to hang on in the corners,  I'm thinking Centipede mainly because it sounds clingy...DaveB

Dave is onto something here.  But we need a figure 8 layout like dirt track racing, to beat the other engineer to the Xing!  Operation is not for wimps...

I loved  this article!  It read almost like a checklist of how I've been operating my own layout over the past 10 years  (albeit on a much smaller scale than the Siskiyou Line):  Bringing in trains to a central yard from "somewhere out there" (a.k.a. staging); having a local destination for every car  on each incoming train; sending out trains to switch the local industries; and finally, sending the locally-retrieved cars from the central yard on the departing intercity trains headed for the outside world. This has proven to be a fail-safe formula for keeping 3-5 guest operators pleasantly occupied for 2 hours during each of my bi-monthly op sessions.
