Interesting railroad

Nice trackplan, interesting railroad.  Being a present day oriented guy I just had to go spend a bit of time looking at maps, satellite views, and a couple videos.  An interesting roster even today.  A couple interesting tidbits from the video below - they have 32 customers, and something like 59% of the business is tires, shipped in boxcars.

Thanls Ken

Ken, After learning about this railroad I have always found it fascinating. I try to keep up on their operations and when they had a diner train I rode it once. Being as I am moving baxk to Oregon I am looking forward to getting out and spending some time on the line again.

Your sections and IKEA ivar

Love the article......but you didnt show much in the way your modular sections are built and how they mount to the IKEA sections. I'd love to see more about that if you have time. I been on the fence on using them and a modular section with backdrop on it just like your describing.

Use the 'search' box to find many articles in MRH showing how people employ the Ivar shelving as benchwork.

Really enjoyed the thoughtful description

Thanks Greg, I really enjoyed the description of the railroad, its history, operations, etc. That really "sells" it. It was surprising to me how some other rr equipment such as sp&s or up could be incorporated as-is without having to go through a paint job...

And of course there are RS3s involved < grin>

As for the modular elements, JoeF described his version of a "C" TOMA for SL2 a while ago, maybe someone can find it and link it here.

I made pockets out of plywood and placed them inside the frame. I would show you pictures if everything was not all packed up for the move. I plan to build a layout based on Astoria Oregon using the same benchwork technique, which as stated is based on Joe's design idea, once I get settled in Portland. I will be sure to post and will most likely be doing some articles on the construction of the layout in the near future.

CoP caboose #201

I'm pretty sure that CoP caboose #201 is ex-Lehigh Valley RR. The porthole ends and triple steps distinguish it from RDG and other railroads that used a similar "Northeastern" design. Also it has a conventional underframe and running board.

I'm away from my reference materials at the moment, but can supply more details if you are interested.

Nice article and an interesting railroad in any era.

C of P decals

Is anyone looking at making decals for the locomotives and a caboose? Great article and nice photos of the early Alcos. It would be interested in N scale decals and start my version of the railroad.

Charles and Paggs

Mark: Thanks Mark and Good eye on the caboose it is indeed a Lehigh Valley caboose. I know that Overland did a model of the LV caboose but I have yet to be able to aquire one. The caboose has been preserved and is in fresh CofP paint sitting at the history museum in Prineville. Paggs: The only decals I have seen are for the Per Diem boxcars. I have yet to price custom decals for this scheme but I think they would not be to bad. I had thought about contacting Circus City Decals to get pricing and if I had some made I would make sure they would be available for anyone who wanta them.

Another possibility for caboose 201

Another possibility for caboose 201 could be made from a P2k Steel Center Cupola Caboose. The sides and cupola appear correct. And the ends have no windows, so drilling the porthole windows would not be difficult. I'll leave it up to the CofP modelers to determine if the frame and undercarrage are correct and how to get decals. I recently found one for $5 at a swap meet and am in the process of renumbering it for my N&W (ex-P&WV caboose).

Agree with Split A/C and Insulation

A great approach.   Just added to my Texas basement (garage).   Now can work on the layout, enjoy a ballgame, and all while 95 degrees outside.

Current Ops on CoP?

Can anyone here inform me about operations on the CoP? I have visited a few times before, but always when no trains appear to be operating (weekends, probably). I have another shot at it next month, where I think I can get there early on a Friday. Can anyone tell me what chances I might have of seeing some action between Prineville and the Junction?

Thanks in advance,

Tom
