...

It will happen when it happens; until then the whole thing is like so many software solutions I have been promised at work but have yet to see released: nice as an announcement, but not yet immediately relevant.

There will be teething issues, but hopefully it is an upgrade.

Hurry up and wait

I poked around over there a bit. Y'all to seem to have addressed my main concern which was losing my blog so I'm good. Just feels like hurry up and wait now.

Updated list of current issues?

Joe, is it possible for you to post (on here or the new forum) an updated list of all the issues identified and a short resolution status? I don't think the latest update on the new forum has them all listed.

Obviously I can’t speak for

Obviously I can’t speak for others but I look at it as mildly interesting subject but until you are ready to announce a date for the transition I will just stay out of it.  I assume your team knows what it is doing and we will be informed how to make the transition when the time comes.

And while I understand why it is happening, and while I hope it improves things on the forums the reality is I deal with enough changes in software and apps and such many if not most of which don’t truly improve things that I just can’t find the energy to generate any enthusiasm about another change.  It seams like a month doesn’t go by with out at least one piece of software I use making changes.  Be it  a OC/Tablet/phone OS change or an app/software change or a website change.  Be it personnel software or work retaliated it seams I am constantly having to relearn something.  And seldom does the new version feature an improvement that makes my life or job easier or the software obviously better.

Once again I am not meaning to belittle what is obviously a lot of work Joe and his team have done I am just pointing out that for many of us we are probably taking a wait and see attitude.  In part to let Joe and company have the time and space needed to get this done right, in part because we have faith that they will do it right and in part because as stated we see so many software changes that this unfortunately is just another one.

So try not to get discouraged if you don’t get the enthusiastic response you may be hoping for.   Just keep up the good work and trust that once we make the transition we will all appreciate your hard work.

Joe, is it possible for you to post (on here or the new forum) an updated list of all the issues identified and a short resolution status? I don't think the latest update on the new forum has them all listed.

Blogs: First long post that was inserted to move content from the opening post is missing.

Blogs: Some blog threads have been duplicated and they show up multiple times in the posts listing.

Blogs and magazine feedback pages: The oldest entries show as 51 years old, which is clearly wrong. The oldest posts should show 13 years old at most. Plus all 51 year old threads, when you drill into them, are empty.

Some photos are missing because the conversion incorrectly converted the path. I explained how to identify those photos and what the correct path should be.

Paragraph breaks should show a blank line between paragraphs for easier reading. (FIXED)

Internal forum link references turn into special boxes with a huge MRH shield on it. Prefer these just stay hyperlinks with a blue underline and not these special boxes with MRH on it. (Appears FIXED)

Enhancement request: Add a check box security option to group setup that says, "Allow editing posts indefinitely" instead of the current 1 hour limit. I plan to keep the 1 hr edit limit for general forum entries, but if you want to do a blog, promote you to superuser. The superuser group will have the allow editing posts indefinitely option checked.

Best estimate as to when these will be fixed: June (6-8 weeks).

P.S. There were some reported search bugs/enhancements, but I consider those minor and not a part of the conversion, per se. I'm addressing those using normal support tickets and not making them part of the conversion. The conversion programmers have enough on their plate already.

51 years old

51 years old, that’s 1970.  A zero value timestamp is 1/1/1970 in one of the common approaches for storing time values (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_time).  If you’re on a mac and see a bogus 1904 date, similar problem (1904 was selected for easier leap year math handling).

Enhancement Request (not a show stopper)

Hi Joe.
I typically read the forum on my iPad, which the forum interprets as a mobile device, and therefore presents the mobile format of the pages. This is perfectly reasonable if I were reading on a phone, but with the added real estate provided by tablets, the “full” version, with all the useful columns displayed, would be nice.

Would it be possible (and reasonable) to either:

  • Detect that I am using a tablet rather than a smart phone, and display the expanded format, or;
  • Provide a button giving me the option of the full format, irrespective of the device I’m using. It would be nice if the site remembered my choice from session to session.

This is certainly not a show stopper, and I think the new forum will be great even if this request is not possible, or too expensive to implement, or a no-go for any other reason. But I really like the full format and would love to be able to use it on my iPad, which is the device of choice for most of my online reading.

Again, thanks for all your tireless work.

An hour for edits?

Many of us post on mobiles and that makes for typos. A couple of days would make more sense I think.
I’m a member of a few forums, and never seen that short of an edit window.

Ron Ventura - Desktop Site setting

On my Android devices, Chrome has a checkbox on it's 3-dot menu labeled "Desktop site" where the browser lies to the server about what version of software it really is and claims to be the desktop version to force the desktop website to show up.

That will accomplish what you are asking for. I would be at least mildly surprised if something equivalent didn't exist in the Apple world as well.

You can always request the desktop site instead on iOS

Open the Safari app on your iPhone or iPad and load a website. Now, tap and hold on the “Refresh” button next to the URL bar. You'll see a popup at the bottom of the screen. From here, select “Request Desktop Site.”

Nice work

I’ve been to the forum. I’m not much of a poster but I’ve had no issues on my iPhone or iPad.

Desktop Site - Duh

@Jeff, @Joe

Duh! I should have thought of that myself. Thanks for the replies.

*edit*:

I tried this in a number of browsers, with no success, but varying results, as follows:

Chrome

When I clicked on “Request Desktop Sitel” on the share menu, I got “The specified action could not be found”. Going back to the list of actions now shows “Request Mobile site” as an option, which results in the same error.

FIREFOX

Clicking on “Request Mobile site” the appearance doesn’t change, but the option changes to “Request Mobile Site”. Clicking on that I get: “A server with the specified hostname could not be found.”

SAFARI

Doesn’t appear to have the option.

So no joy there either. There must be a way (no I’m not switching to Android ) but I haven’t found it. I’ve successfully used the “Request Desktop Site” elsewhere, so I’m a bit stumped.
