Trip pin adjustment

In the photo the car coupler hangs down at an angle.  It might be from a bent shank.  More likely it is from a coupler pocket which has an inside vertical dimension which is too large.  Shim inside the pocket to make the coupler horizontal.  And then you may need to use an offset shank coupler or to lower the car body.   With properly installed couplers there is less need for pin bending.   Dick Bradley

Ugh. Graphite!

I just finished up a ten year stint as a Cub Scout Cubmaster. During every pinewood derby the boys go nutty over graphite thinking it's the secret to making a car run fast. We have to wash the track down every year! I have more tubes of graphite in my pinewood derby box than I can shake a stick at because, as every Scout Leader knows, all that stuff eventually ends up at YOUR house.
