Thank you for the kind words . . .

Knut. It was fun to reminisce.

Also, it gave me the opportunity to share with my dad who was admitted to hospice while I was writing the column.

Thanks Bruce

That was a very good read. Enjoyed it immensely. Cal Poly late sixties? We might have run into each other!

You probably knew some of my roommates.

I had lots of "archie" roommates along the way. Plus one roommate who was a bonded locksmith and railfan from Soquel. He had, I believe, every SP padlock key known to man. But that's another story and the statue of limitations has expired.

You may have been at the Jefferson Airplane concert in early '67 (right after Surrealistic Pillow came out) that I did sound for. What a blast that was. Fed my compulsive behavior about sound quality and speaker systems.

I was there

and it sounded great!

Life took me on some journeys too and I ended up being a recording engineer. Sound engineering and trains. Six degrees of separation!

Here's where I spend my time away from model railroading.orrected.jpg

I wasn't there but I saw them at Monterey pop festival and the sound was great. I drove a 1957 Morris minor woody over from Santa Cruz and camped out for two days......DaveB

Wow, mixer envy here!

Didn't know Atascadero is a hot spot of recording. Or is it Caribou Ranch west?

Atascadero as a hot spot

It's a hot spot for weather! I've been fortunate that over these many years my clients have been very good to me and spread the word as they tour and I've built up a client base that travel from all over to record here. Doing the math as to my age it is obvious that I am, ahem, "mature", so retirement is in the near future for me. I specialize in roots, acoustic, folk (although I do a lot of other work) and one of my biggest concerns is finding a new recording home where my long time friends will be served at the level they deserve.

At the Jefferson Airplane concert, whose equipment was being used? Bob Kimball used to have one of the bigger systems in town at the time and I was just wondering if you knew him.

Airplanes

Karl et al -

I flew mostly Cessnas - even was a fractional owner in a 172 in Colorado Springs. Did get a few hours in a Bellanca Viking and an American Tiger. But in the mid 80s moved my travel budget from private aircraft to scuba.

Bruce, congratulation on your

Bruce, congratulation on your achieving MMR status.  Five years ago I visited by step-sister who has a place in Pebble Creek and was blown away when she took me to visit the layout there.  It was apparent that a lot of residents received a lot of enjoyment from the involvement in model railroading.  We should all be so lucky to live in such a superb planned community.

I just submitted an article to MRH, "Rail Fanning The Great Lakes Western" about our club layout. You understand why my columns frequently include a line, such as "... on our club layout ..."

Some of the famous OpSig folks from the bay area operated here on the first Desert Ops weekend. There were a few in the group who were not happy having a "club" layout as one of their precious choices. They left raving.

One of the best things about this article ...

was being able to share it with my father, when he still had a bit of his intellect about him.

He faded this year. As Joe Fugate reported in the November Publisher's Musings column ( https://forum.mrhmag.com/magazine-feedback-was-ezines-891776), we lost him in October. He was just a few months short of his 97th birthday.

Condolences

My condolences to you and your family, Bruce!
So good that you was able to share the article with your father before you lost him, and also that he got all these years.

Dispatch panel?

Now that is what I call a humdinger of a dispatch panel!

Seriously, great article, glad your dad got to be a part of it.  My dad was instrumental in my life long love of the hobby.  He built me a layout when I was 6 and I actually got to play with it when I was 10!    Of course that was a few years ago!  Again, congrats.  Russ
