I must try your weathering technique Chris...

One day when the layout has progressed to an almost finished state I'll try your techniques on some of my other RDG GP35's.

Gouache

Something I've never tried but I think you've given me a shove in that direction.  Also, love that you mentioned a mistake and how you fixed it (Step 12 in the article).

Looks beautiful!  Any outdoor/sunlight shots?

Right on time...

This article is a good motivator,  considering I have a few locomotives all under going this process,  hopefully to become  Conrail GP35s  3640 (all green ex-Reading), 3660 (ex EL),  and GP18 7499 (ex-LV).    I also have a few engines that probably need some weathering to look right,  but I am always  nervous about ruining an otherwise attractive model!

However,  this method looks easy (or at least the article makes it look easy!),  so I will have to give it a try.

The real question is,  how would all this look on PC Black?   I have a few electrics that need the treatment as well!

I don't have any outdoor

I don't have any outdoor shots of this one, sorry! Soon as it was finished I shot the pics I have and packed it up for shipping. Chris

Right on time...

Try to keep in mind that you want to darken light colors and lighten dark colors for effect. Doing PC black engines I mix black and white for a grey color to apply. If you use my methods please force yourself to remember that everything is removable until sealed with Dullcote. Nothing to be afraid of! Chris

For those following this series and Chris's work...

The actual unit was built for our layout here in Australia, I was extremely lucky to find Chris on eBay as he was selling some of his other work (which by the way I missed out on) so decided to contact him and ask if he'd be interested in doing some commissioned work, and he accepted.

I had some previous work done with Kato GP35 Reading's and really wanted a patched out one to Conrail, so Chris and I had a few chats about which way to head and we decided to go with an undecorated Kato GP35 for the base and Chris would build it up from there from prototype photos of unit I didn't have yet.

I must admit that the unit is far better in person than in photographs, Chris's weathering techniques are spot on and very realistic, I'll endeavor to get a few outdoor photos of the unit for those that have requested them.

In the meantime here a few shots from our layout on the completed Middletown Industrial Area...
