Really enjoyed your video.

Really enjoyed your video. Thought the foam and the modular set up was very interesting. It might not work for real complex trackage or multi level layouts but it sure is an interesting concept and option. I suspect what you have shown us as what is neat this week will continue to be neat for quite a while.

Modular Construction

I have been thinking about using a modular construction technique for my layout. Since it's a 12X12 space, 4 foot or even 6 foot modules can work well. I noticed something with your layout that I've never seen with a modular layout, you bring the track right to the edge of the module, so the only thing connecting one module to the next, are rail joiners. Every modular layout I've ever seen before had about a three inch gap at each module edge, and then used a six inch jumper track to make the connection.

I also suspect that once the module frames are built, track can be laid normally, like you would on any benchwork. Then once the track has been permanently mounted, you cut the rails at the edges of the modules, and put in rail joiners. That way you don't have to worry about measuring everything to make sure the track aligns from module to module.

Flush End Track

Ken B,

If you want additional insite into building modules with the tracks running to the edges, you should checkout some of M.C. Fujiwara posts. He is an N scaler, but his module track techniques will work in most scales.

The Sipping & Switching Society of NC website ( S&SS Home Page) also has a good discussion and instructions on building and running modules with flush end tracks.

DCC Bus wiring.

What about running the DCC bus wires with modular construction like this?
