Speakers

Whilst I am no great shakes at general "kit bashing" (and you can see that as I include decoder/speaker installs as part of that subject!), but Bruce's articles are always great value- and this latest one has given me a bunch of ideas to deal with some loco's that have been giving me "fits" with speaker placement and resultant sound. Thanks Bruce! keep up the good work

Tren-Italia

Bruce,

I did the trip from Livorno, through Pisa, to Florence, then down through Rome to Civitavecchia to catch the cruise ship I was on. I found that Tren-Italia will get you from point A to point B, just don't expect the train to be on time, or even show up at all. The train from Venice to Rome never showed. I spotted it a mile down the track, with people milling all around it. By the time it got to the station it became the train to Balongia, not Rome.

Still, it was an adventure, and I had fun.

It seems to me that one way to get good sound from a GP or SD, would be to place the speaker under the fans, like you did in 3. The problem I have, is that the fans and grilles on the three GP38s I have are molded as a solid piece. I'm thinking I could drill out the fans, and replace them with more detailed parts. The dynamic brake fan looks like it has the most room, so placing the speaker there, and baffleing appropriately, might be the way to go.

I haven't taken the shell off yet, so I really don't know what I have to work with, but solving the problems of how to get what I want, is half the fun! I really appreciate the fact that you walk through the project, but also point out general concepts to keep in mind, so that with a little thought, anyone should be able to get decent sound.

The main thing to remember, is just try it. I think that's he part most people have the hardest time with.

Baffles

Bruce,

Like all EU countries, As a senior, Trin-Italia offers a 50% or more discount on all trains if you sign up on the web and pick up your pass at the closest main station.  One of your trips would have covered the cheap pass and the occasional wait will be paid back with the extremely cheap fares that will cover a great meal outside the major cities. Note:  One knows an Italian train or bus is not going to arrive when the only people waiting are tourists-the Italians always know hours ahead and make other arrangements.

to the point: It looks as if only one side of a speaker requires a baffle and it doesn't matter front or back side? Also, on the one 2-speaker B-unit it looks like the sound is coming off the rear of the speakers and through the truck openings? As always, experienced information!  joel

Type of Caulk

Bruce,

Thanks for the information. You mention using caulk during installation.  What brand or kind to you recommend?

Thanks,

Ted

I suggest you go back and review my article mentioned in the column ("How Do I Get The Sound Out?"). It, and the accompanying video should cover all your issues. For the most part you are right.

The caulk will be covered in next month's column: PolySeamSeal.
